Bid' ahs can <strong>on</strong>ly be opposed by scholars. When scholars <strong>and</strong> knowledge<br />
diminish, bid'ahs subsequently proliferate.<br />
2. Following Pers<strong>on</strong>al Desires<br />
Whosoever disregards the Glorious Qur'an <strong>and</strong> the Sunnah of the Prophet<br />
(PBUH) will c<strong>on</strong>sequently follow his overwhelming pers<strong>on</strong>al desires <strong>and</strong> cravings.<br />
Almighty Allah says:<br />
"But if they do not resp<strong>on</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> you, then know that they <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
follow their {own] desires. And who is more astray than <strong>on</strong>e who<br />
follows his desire withoutguidancefrom Allah?"<br />
And says:<br />
(Qur'an: Al-Qa~a~: 50)<br />
"Have you seen he who has taken as his god his {own] desire, <strong>and</strong><br />
Allah has sent him astray due <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> knowledge <strong>and</strong> has set a seal up<strong>on</strong><br />
his hearing <strong>and</strong> his heart<strong>and</strong> put over his visi<strong>on</strong> a veil? So who will<br />
guide him after Allah?" (Qur'an: Al-Jathyiah: 23)<br />
Certainly, bid'ahs are natural c<strong>on</strong>sequences of following <strong>on</strong>e's inclinati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
<strong>and</strong> desires. .<br />
3. Bias <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wards Fixed Ideas <strong>and</strong> Certain Individuals<br />
Fanaticism for an adopted view or for a specific group ofpeople may impede a<br />
pers<strong>on</strong> from following proofs <strong>and</strong> grasping the truth. Allah, Exalted be He, says:<br />
'~nd where it is said <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed:<br />
they say, 'RDther, we willfollow that which we found ourfathers<br />
doing:" (Qur'an: Al-Baqarah: 170)<br />
This is the state ofthe followers of Sufism <strong>and</strong> grave-worshippers who, when<br />
being summ<strong>on</strong>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> follow the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Book</str<strong>on</strong>g> ofAllah<strong>and</strong> the Sunnah ofHis Prophet, take<br />
hold oftheir saints <strong>and</strong> the doctrines oftheir forefathers.<br />
4. Imitating the Disbelievers<br />
It is <strong>on</strong>e of the most compelling causes leading <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> bid'ahs. According <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
Prophetic hadith narrated <strong>on</strong> the authority ofAbu Waqid Al-Laytht, who said:<br />
"We went al<strong>on</strong>g with Allah's Messenger (PBUH) <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hunayn. At<br />
that time, we were new <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Islam. We passed by a lote tree called<br />
Dh4tu Anw4l bel<strong>on</strong>ging <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the polytheists who were intent <strong>on</strong><br />
devoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> it <strong>and</strong> they used <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> hang their arms <strong>on</strong> it. After that,<br />
we passed by a lote tree that we said, '0 Messenger ofAllah! Make
