A new concept vessel is <strong>com</strong>bining diesel-electric<br />

hybrid technology with renewable solar energy and<br />

a high-capacity battery, resulting in a clean, quiet,<br />

safe and more enjoyable boating experience.<br />

The boat is a project of Mercury Marine, <strong>Cummins</strong>’<br />

joint venture partner for marine propulsion using<br />

<strong>Cummins</strong> diesel engines 15 liters and smaller.<br />

The boat reduces energy consumption by<br />

using solar power to recharge the lithium<br />

ion batteries and advanced automatic<br />

control strategies for optimal efficiency.<br />

The environmental benefits include cleaner<br />

air and water and greenhouse gas reduction<br />

through better fuel efficiency and the use of<br />

renewable energy.<br />

The hybrid propulsion <strong>com</strong>bines reliable diesel<br />

engines and electrical systems so they can<br />

operate together or independently, providing<br />

built-in backups. Solar power is independent<br />

of shore power and provides electrical backup<br />

to bilge pumps, starting batteries and other<br />

critical <strong>com</strong>ponents.<br />

This new technology was shown at the Miami<br />

International Boat Show earlier this year to<br />

positive reviews.<br />
