Letter from the chairman<br />

<strong>Cummins</strong> Stakeholder:<br />

Over the past year, <strong>Cummins</strong><br />

has continued to focus<br />

its efforts on keeping the<br />

Company strong during<br />

the global recession, which<br />

began late in 2008.<br />

Our work to reduce costs, align manufacturing<br />

capacity with demand and serve customers well<br />

when they need us the most has allowed us to meet<br />

our goals of earning a solid profit and generating the<br />

cash necessary to invest in critical technologies for<br />

the future.<br />

In these challenging economic times, I also am<br />

pleased to say that <strong>Cummins</strong> has not lost sight of<br />

the importance of delivering on our <strong>com</strong>mitments to<br />

customers, shareholders, employees, government<br />

and the <strong>com</strong>munities in which we operate. In fact,<br />

the stakeholder model first introduced at <strong>Cummins</strong><br />

40 years ago by then-Chairman J. Irwin Miller, remains<br />

a critical <strong>com</strong>ponent to our long-term success.<br />

As we look to a future that offers significant growth<br />

prospects, our ability to create a sustainable global<br />

organization that is responsive to the needs of our<br />

stakeholders has never been more important. Our<br />

response to the <strong>com</strong>plex challenges facing <strong>Cummins</strong><br />

today is rooted in the values that define <strong>Cummins</strong>.<br />

Acting with integrity. Doing our part to improve the<br />

<strong>com</strong>munities where we live and work. Embracing<br />

diversity. Operating with a global vision. Striving to<br />

always exceed the expectations of our customers.<br />

Being first to market with innovative products<br />

and services.<br />

These statements represent <strong>Cummins</strong>’ core values,<br />

and our 36,000 employees worldwide continue to<br />

demonstrate their <strong>com</strong>mitment to bringing these<br />

words to life every day. <strong>Cummins</strong>’ seventh annual<br />

<strong>Sustainability</strong> <strong>Report</strong> highlights the progress we<br />

have made in the past year around these values.<br />

As in past years, this year’s report contains a<br />

significant emphasis on the Company’s corporate<br />

responsibility work.<br />

Broadly speaking, <strong>Cummins</strong> operates under the<br />

philosophy that corporate responsibility is not simply<br />

something that is “nice to do,” but is a way of doing<br />

business that contributes directly to the financial health<br />

of our <strong>com</strong>pany over the long-term.<br />

Building successful, vibrant <strong>com</strong>munities leads to<br />

stronger markets for our products. Being seen as<br />

a <strong>com</strong>pany that cares about all its stakeholders is<br />

essential to our efforts to attract and retain the most<br />

talented workers from around the world, which is<br />

critical to the success of any global <strong>com</strong>pany.<br />

In a similar fashion, part of <strong>Cummins</strong>’ Mission<br />

demands that everything we do leads to a cleaner,<br />

healthier, safer environment.<br />

That <strong>com</strong>mitment drives our work as a worldwide<br />

leader in emissions technology, which provides<br />

<strong>Cummins</strong> with a significant <strong>com</strong>petitive advantage.<br />

It also is behind ongoing efforts to reduce the<br />

environmental impact of our facilities, strengthen<br />

our voice in the public policy debate around issues<br />

such as climate change and to engage our employees<br />

on ways they can make a difference.<br />

This year’s <strong>Sustainability</strong> <strong>Report</strong> also focuses on<br />

the global nature of <strong>Cummins</strong>’ operations, and the<br />

challenges and opportunities that <strong>com</strong>e with doing<br />

business in 190 countries worldwide.<br />

More than half of <strong>Cummins</strong>’ employees work outside<br />

the United States, and approximately 60 percent<br />

of the Company’s revenues are generated from<br />

international markets, which offer some of our<br />

strongest future growth prospects.<br />
