Blue Emergency Phones<br />

What is a Blue Emergency Phone?<br />

One method for contacting the <strong>University</strong><br />

Police is through the Code Blue Emergency<br />

Phones. These are emergency phones, which<br />

provide direct two-way communications to<br />

the Police Communications Operators in<br />

the Communications Centre. There are 21<br />

Emergency Phones located strategically on<br />

grounds throughout the campus.<br />

The Code Blue Emergency Phones are simple<br />

to operate. Pressing the emergency button on<br />

a Blue Phone will connect directly to Campus<br />

Police Communications Operator. The Police<br />

Communications Operators are located at 601<br />

Dundas Street for this region. Campus Police<br />

Communications. Operator is at the Campus<br />

Police SLB location, on campus. For locations,<br />

refer to the campus map.<br />

When to use an Emergency Blue Phone<br />

The Code Blue Emergency Phones have<br />

been installed for safety. All campus users;<br />

including <strong>student</strong>s, faculty, staff and the public<br />

are encouraged to activate the phones if they<br />

encounter any situation that makes them<br />

uncomfortable. The Code Blue Emergency<br />

Phones are for your convenience and should<br />

be used: if a crime is in progress or witnessed;<br />

if emergency assistance is needed; if you are<br />

being harassed or feel threatened; if you are<br />

ill or require medical attention; if you require<br />

assistance or directions.<br />

The Campus Police Service is involved in<br />

activities that include Patrols, Response, Crime<br />

Prevention, Emergency Management and Fire<br />

Safety. Special Constables have the Police Officer<br />

powers necessary to deal with most issues found<br />

on campus. Other associated services in support<br />

<strong>of</strong> campus safety include the Student Emergency<br />

Response Team, Volunteer Foot Patrollers,<br />

Occupational Health and Safety, Equity Services,<br />

Housing and more.<br />

Campus Community Police Service is an accredited<br />

campus law enforcement agency.<br />

Code <strong>of</strong> Student Conduct<br />

<strong>Western</strong>, as one <strong>of</strong> the top universities in<br />

Canada, has established high academic and<br />

behavioural standards and any compromise <strong>of</strong><br />

these standards can be detrimental to both the<br />

individual and the <strong>University</strong>. The Code <strong>of</strong><br />

Student Conduct at <strong>Western</strong> covers both on and<br />

<strong>of</strong>f campus conduct and can be used<br />

when behaviour is excessive, frightening or<br />

causes a personal safety concern.<br />

Discipline ranges from a warning to expulsion.<br />

The main purpose <strong>of</strong> such discipline<br />

is to address negative behaviour, promote<br />

a safe and harmonious environment and to<br />

return <strong>student</strong>s to the focus <strong>of</strong> their studies.<br />

Collection <strong>of</strong> Personal<br />

Information<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Ontario</strong><br />

collects personal information under the<br />

authority <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Western</strong><br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> Act, 1982, as amended. The<br />

information is related directly to and needed by<br />

the <strong>University</strong> for the purposes <strong>of</strong> recruitment,<br />

admission, registration, progression, graduation,<br />

administration, and other activities related to its<br />

programs.<br />

The information is used to administer<br />

and operate academic, athletic, recreational,<br />

<strong>student</strong> development, <strong>student</strong> employment,<br />

financial aid, and other <strong>University</strong> programs<br />

and activities, including residence operations<br />

and alumni and development activities and<br />

programs. For example, personal information<br />

will be used to determine academic status,<br />

record academic achievement, produce class<br />

lists, issue <strong>student</strong> cards, process transcript<br />

requests, maintain tuition accounts, issue tax<br />

receipts, notify <strong>student</strong>s <strong>of</strong> important issues<br />

and updates, determine eligibility for <strong>student</strong><br />

awards, scholarships and financial support,<br />

and administer financial aid and government<br />

financial assistance programs.<br />

It is the policy <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> to consider<br />

the following information about current and<br />

former <strong>student</strong>s to be publicly available and to<br />

provide it to third parties upon request: <strong>student</strong>’s<br />

full name; Faculty(ies)/Schools in which <strong>student</strong><br />

is/was enrolled, with major field <strong>of</strong> study;<br />

degree(s) awarded by <strong>Western</strong> and date(s)<br />

conferred; and academic or other <strong>University</strong><br />

honors or distinctions. At any time an individual<br />

may request that this information cease to be<br />

made publicly available by contacting the Office<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Registrar, in writing.<br />

Personal information may be used for<br />

statistical and research purposes by the<br />

<strong>University</strong>, other post-secondary educational<br />

institutions, researchers, and the provincial and<br />

federal government. The <strong>University</strong> discloses<br />

specific and limited personal information<br />

to recognized <strong>student</strong> organizations for the<br />

purposes <strong>of</strong> administering their programs<br />

including membership administration, health<br />

plan, elections, and issuing <strong>of</strong> bus passes.<br />

Personal information <strong>of</strong> <strong>student</strong>s enrolled in an<br />

Affiliated <strong>University</strong> College is shared with the<br />

Affiliated <strong>University</strong> College.<br />

Select information may be shared with third<br />

parties, including: award donors; government<br />

funding<br />

agencies to process financial assistance<br />

applications; financial institutions to confirm<br />

<strong>student</strong> enrollment; independent <strong>student</strong><br />

loan administration companies to process<br />

<strong>student</strong> loan documents; collection agencies<br />

for outstanding accounts; municipalities for<br />

debts owed by <strong>student</strong>s; and contracted service<br />

providers acting on behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Credit card information is transmitted to an<br />

independent processing company in order to<br />

process payments. Personal information may<br />

be disclosed to third parties in the course <strong>of</strong> an<br />

investigation <strong>of</strong> misconduct. Information relating<br />

to misconduct and/or falsified documents may<br />

be shared with other educational institutions.<br />
