Scholarships & Awards<br />

Many scholarships <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>Western</strong><br />

have deadlines at the end <strong>of</strong> October and may<br />

contain an essay component that requires<br />

some time to compose. While <strong>Academic</strong><br />

Merit Scholarships require no application,<br />

both National Scholarships and Combined<br />

Merit Scholarships do require an application.<br />

<strong>of</strong> your choosing, such as extra-curricular<br />

activities, interests, your program <strong>of</strong> study,<br />

Combined <strong>Academic</strong> Merit<br />

Awards<br />

These are awarded to <strong>student</strong>s based on<br />

a combination <strong>of</strong> academic merit and one<br />

or more non-academic requirements, such<br />

as participation in extra-curricular activities<br />

and demonstration <strong>of</strong> leadership qualities.<br />

Each award has its own academic criteria and<br />

guidelines.<br />

Application Information<br />

The deadlines for these awards vary<br />

from October 31st to February 28th <strong>of</strong><br />

each year, depending on the terms <strong>of</strong> the<br />

award; please refer to the individual award<br />

application for specific details. Applications<br />

can be downloaded beginning in September<br />

by choosing the appropriate link at www.<br />

Recipients will be chosen and notified<br />

by letter within two months <strong>of</strong> the award<br />

deadline.<br />

Graduate Scholarships and<br />

Funding<br />

Did you know that most graduate school<br />

programs are eligible for a large amount <strong>of</strong><br />

funding and many external scholarships? In 2009,<br />

master’s <strong>student</strong>s at <strong>Western</strong> received, on average,<br />

$21,841 per year in funding. Choosing to pursue<br />

a graduate degree doesn’t have to mean taking on<br />

In-course Scholarships and Awards are<br />

established and funded by individual donors,<br />

corporations, faculties, departments, and the<br />

governing body <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. Scholarships and<br />

Awards are given out in the fall <strong>of</strong> each year based<br />

on the <strong>student</strong>’s previous academic performance<br />

and current registration.<br />

Eligibility: Once a <strong>student</strong> has completed one<br />

year <strong>of</strong> studies at <strong>Western</strong>, they become eligible<br />

for In Course Awards. Eligibility <strong>of</strong> all scholarships<br />

and awards granted by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Western</strong><br />

<strong>Ontario</strong> are reserved for <strong>student</strong>s registered at<br />

the Main Campus only, unless the provisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> a particular award state otherwise. Students<br />

must have completed their prescribed academic<br />

program requiring five or more full courses in the<br />

previous year, and currently be registered in a fulltime<br />

course load as determined by their enrolled<br />

program. Students who completed their previous<br />

academic year at an affiliate college or institution<br />

other than <strong>Western</strong> are not eligible.<br />
