Alternative Spring Break<br />

<strong>Western</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>student</strong>s the opportunity<br />

to participate in a service-learning experience<br />

during Reading Week each year. Since 2003,<br />

hundreds <strong>of</strong> <strong>student</strong>s from all faculties have<br />

travelled to places like Louisiana, the Dominican<br />

Republic, Costa Rica and Winnipeg to engage in<br />

community development projects. The program<br />

aims to connect <strong>student</strong>s’ academic learning<br />

with real-world issues and enhance their sense <strong>of</strong><br />

civic engagement.<br />

International Income Tax<br />

Preparation (IITP) Volunteers<br />

IITP volunteers are <strong>Western</strong> <strong>student</strong>s<br />

whose role is to assist international <strong>student</strong>s<br />

(individually or in small groups) and their<br />

spouses/partners with completing their<br />

Canadian Income Tax Forms during the<br />

Income Tax Clinic held in March and April.<br />

In addition to enhancing their cross-cultural<br />

communication skills, IITP volunteers can<br />

benefit from learning how to file their own<br />

taxes and become familiar with international<br />

<strong>student</strong> tax issues. Training and a Volunteer<br />

Certificate is provided by Canada Revenue<br />

International Peer<br />

Connection (IPC)<br />

The IPC program connects new<br />

international (graduate and undergraduate)<br />

<strong>student</strong>s with current <strong>Western</strong> <strong>student</strong>s called<br />

Peer Guides. Peer Guides are<br />

familiar<br />

with the <strong>Western</strong> campus and have had a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> international and intercultural<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong> their own. Peer Guides act as<br />

guides, resource people, cultural interpreters<br />

and friendly supports to new international<br />

<strong>student</strong>s during their transition to <strong>Western</strong><br />

and Canada. Volunteering as a Peer Guide<br />

is an opportunity to enhance intercultural,<br />

leadership and helping skills as well as<br />

develop international friendships. For more<br />

activities with <strong>student</strong>s; guide field trips<br />

and laboratory tours; provide science fair<br />

mentoring and judging; <strong>of</strong>fer organized<br />

workshops in fields like biotechnology<br />

and physics; engage <strong>student</strong>s in bonafide<br />

scientific research; give whole-school<br />

workshops and presentations; and give<br />

workshops at museums or community<br />

events.<br />
