Off to <strong>Western</strong><br />

Off to <strong>Western</strong> events are hosted in August<br />

by Alumni <strong>Western</strong>, in select hometowns that<br />

send first year <strong>student</strong>s <strong>of</strong>f to <strong>Western</strong> in the<br />

fall. Current <strong>student</strong>s and new graduates are<br />

Hometown Volunteers and speak to incoming<br />

first year <strong>student</strong>s about their <strong>student</strong><br />

experience at <strong>Western</strong> including O-week,<br />

living in residence, academics and social life.<br />

Orientation Week is one <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

important programs the USC provides for<br />

the <strong>student</strong>s at <strong>Western</strong>. Not only does the<br />

program help welcome the incoming class<br />

<strong>of</strong> first year <strong>student</strong>s, it also provides 800<br />

volunteer positions for upper year <strong>student</strong>s.<br />

Each Orientation leader (Soph) is chosen<br />

through a selection process from a pool <strong>of</strong><br />

1500 applicants. There are five different types<br />

<strong>of</strong> Soph positions available: Residence Sophs,<br />

Charity Sophs, Faculty Sophs, Info Team<br />

Sophs, and Affiliated College<br />

Sophs.<br />

Leadership positions are also available, such as<br />

being the Head Soph <strong>of</strong> a team, or a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> Orientation Staff that works directly with the<br />

Orientation Coordinator in planning the week.<br />

This is the <strong>student</strong>-run government<br />

body <strong>of</strong> <strong>Western</strong>’s sorority community.<br />

Each sorority provides its members with<br />

a well-rounded university experience<br />

through leadership, scholarship, social,<br />

and philanthropic opportunities, as well as<br />

providing a lifetime <strong>of</strong> membership benefits.<br />

Sport Clubs<br />

Campus Recreation currently facilitates<br />

17 <strong>student</strong> sport clubs, including various<br />

martial arts, triathlon, synchronized<br />

swimming, and more. A Campus<br />

Recreation sport<br />

club is a sanctioned organization, established<br />

by <strong>student</strong>s, that provides an opportunity<br />

for all Campus Recreation members to<br />

participate in a specific sport or physical<br />

activity. Involvement in a sport club is<br />

strictly voluntary; they are designed to<br />

enhance the <strong>University</strong> experience. Sport<br />

clubs may emphasize any or all <strong>of</strong> the<br />

following: socialization, instruction and<br />

skill development, <strong>student</strong> leadership<br />

development, and competition.<br />

As Canada’s largest <strong>student</strong> union, the<br />

USC is committed to making your university<br />

experience enriching, exciting, and enjoyable.<br />

In addition to programming events and<br />

managing <strong>University</strong> Community Centre<br />

operations, the USC lobbies all levels <strong>of</strong><br />

government to ensure that your education is<br />

affordable, accessible, and <strong>of</strong> the highest quality<br />

both socially and academically. You can get<br />

involved by becoming a representative on the<br />

council, working on committees, volunteering<br />

at our media outlets, or coordinating numerous<br />

USC projects like Theatre <strong>Western</strong>, Cultural<br />

Caravan, Charity Ball, and more! The USC<br />

publishes Canada’s only daily <strong>student</strong><br />

newspaper, The Gazette, and operates 94.9<br />

CHRW, an award-winning radio<br />

station. The USC also provides a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> services including a bus<br />

pass, <strong>student</strong> health plan, food<br />

bank, and <strong>student</strong> groups like<br />

Pride <strong>Western</strong>, the Women’s Issues<br />

Network, Enviro<strong>Western</strong>, and over<br />

180 clubs.<br />

Commissioners are the<br />

foundation <strong>of</strong> your <strong>University</strong><br />

Students’ Council. They oversee<br />

major USC events such as<br />

awareness weeks and campuswide<br />

campaigns. Applications for<br />

all Commissioner positions will<br />

be available in February at the<br />

USC Office in the UCC Room<br />

340. Unfilled Commissioner<br />

positions will re-open in<br />
