EAGLES LANDING WINERY - 5
127 North St., Marquette, Iowa
563-873-2509
www.eagleslandingwinery.com
In the early years of operating, Eagles Landing Bed & Breakfast owners,
Roger and Connie Halvorson, always put a bottle of some national
brand of wine into
their guest rooms.
These days they keep
it a lot closer to home
with a vintage from
the family-operated
winery, about a block
from the Mississippi
River in downtown
Marquette. Along with
son Jay and his wife
Cindy, the Halvorsons
use 9 different varieties
of cold-climate grapes
from their own vines
and other small family
growers on both sides of the river to produce nearly 30 types of wine.
Bragging rights go to Starboard, a white port that was named Best Iowa
Wine in the 2009 Mid-American Wine Competition. Another favorite is
Serenity – a dark chocolate raspberry dessert wine, described by a taster
with a one simple word “heavenly.”
Visit tasting room and gift shop, open 10 am to 5 pm daily.
Sinnipee Valley Vineyard & Winery - 4
2 miles west of Kieler, Wisconsin (Grant County)
4547 Timber Lane, Cuba City
608-568-3212
Sinnipee Valley Vineyard is located among the scenic Mississippi
River bluffs in extreme southwest Wisconsin. The vineyard, established
in 2003 with 600 plants, has expanded
to 7 acres totaling approximately 3500
vines. Our varieties include Dechaunac,
Frontenac, St. Croix, Concord, St.
Pepin, and LaCrosse to produce wines
distinctive to Wisconsin. Cherries
from Door County and cranberries and
blackberries from New York help to
create the 17 wines that are produced in
our winery which opened in 2005.
In 2007, a tasting room was added.
April through December winery and
tasting room hours are Friday, Saturday
and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. Our wines include dry red and
white, semi-sweet red, white and blush.
Our concord “Jubilee” is a favorite. A
special event, Chocolate Trail, held Saturday and Sunday of Memorial
Day Weekend, is a great opportunity to enjoy the pairing of several
chocolates with specific wines.
Seasonal vineyard tours are available by appointment. The winery
is closed Christmas Day, Easter, and Thanksgiving Day. January and
February the winery is open by appointment only.
SPURGEON VINEYARDS - 2
16008 Pine Tree Rd., Highland (Grant County)
800-236-5555 www.spurgeonvineyards.com
When Glen and Mary Spurgeon planted their first vines more
than 30 years ago, they had no idea their vineyard would grow
to 16 acres filled with Aurora, Foch, Baco Noir, and DeChaunac,
just to name a few of the varieties of grapes they use. Their
most popular wine is Ruby Lady, a sweet red made with Concord
grapes. They also use other Wisconsin grown fruits like cherries
and cranberries. Don’t miss their Harvest Fest in mid-October,
complete with hayrides into the vineyard. The cooler in the
tasting room and store features local cheeses and meats. “Got
Wine?” There’s also a selection of wearing apparel available for
the wine aficionado. See the bottling machine and all the other
essential equipment with a tour in the adjacent winery. Tours
offered April through October.
Visit 10 am – 5 pm daily. Closed major holidays and
Christmas through New Years Day.
WHISPERING WINDS WINERY - 3
13541 Blue School Rd., Fennimore (Grant County)
608-943-9941
Quadruple means the
number four. Winemaker
Jim Eisele shortened it to
“druple” when he created
his best selling Drupleberry
Wine, a sweet combination
of strawberry, raspberry,
blackberry, and blueberry.
Each sip brings forth a subtle
infusion of flavors, with no
one fruit taking center stage.
Eisele had been a home
winemaker for a dozen years,
when he recently turned
his hobby and passion into
a business with a small,
unpretentious winery set atop
the hillside on a scenic back
road. In addition to local
grapes and other fruits, he uses Wisconsin-grown cranberries
from a bog owned by a friend. He currently produces 12 different
varieties, with two new wines (including a Frontenac Gris) to be
released in spring of 2010.
Visit Wednesday through Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.
