At the opposite corner of the county is Viola, tucked
into the hills along the winding Kickapoo River. The “Bud
Wheeler Horse Arena” hosts the Viola Horse and Colt Show,
held the third weekend in September. Crowds of 15,000
enjoy a day filled with horse, tractor and truck events, a
parade, carnival, and an arts and crafts show.
Along the countryside in this part of Richland County
you’ll see horse-drawn wagons from the Amish settlements.
Some commercial
operations are
developing and
products are
available locally.
Continuing
across the northern
border of the
country, you'll
drive through Yuba,
well known for its
fabulous Bohemian
cooks and
interesting ethnic
places to explore.
Cazenovia,
at the northeast
corner of the
county, boasts
54-acre Lee Lake
– a favorite place for water activities. Pan fish, largemouth
bass, and walleye keep fishermen happy and a special
dock for handicapped sportspersons is available. The
third weekend in July is the Caz Celebration. Cazenovia
supports their hometown baseball team in the tournaments
that weekend, along with amusement rides, music, games,
a garden tractor pull, parade, barbecue, and horseshoe
tournaments.
More centrally located in the county are Boaz and
Bosstown to the west, and Twin Bluffs to the east. Each
has interesting buildings, shops and places to explore.
Boaz Park has ball fields, a community building, shelters
and playground, and is bordered on the west by Mill Creek.
Boaz Fun Days is held at the park the third weekend in July
when they have baseball games and tournaments, a truck
pull, along with mule and horse pulls and shows. Nearby Five
Points, well known for its Norwegian population, hosts the
best Lutefisk Dinner in the Midwest in mid October each year.
Homecoming in Ithaca is what homecomings in other
towns pattern themselves after . . . their celebration is a fair,
parade, and homecoming all in one . . . with pride in Ithaca
being the common
theme. Good trout
fishing, the orchard,
rolling beautiful hills,
and Elephant Trunk
Rock, as well as the
nearby tepee, endear
this community to the
local population, and
visitors can’t help but
fall in love with Ithaca.
In the heart of
Richland County lies
Richland Center, a
Wisconsin “Main
Street” community and
the birthplace of worldfamed
architect, Frank
Lloyd Wright. Wright
left his imprint on
the area by returning during the World War I era to design a
warehouse for local food wholesaler, A.D. German. Today this
warehouse remains as his only building of that time period
still standing. The four-story structure, sometimes called a
Mayan Temple because of its unique concrete frieze around
the top floor and its narrow vertical windows. Visitors come
from all over the world to see the hills and valleys that gave
inspiration to the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright.
The natural beauty of Richland County attracts talented
artists and crafters who devote their lives to producing high
quality products. Many of their works are displayed at the
Red Door Gallery in Richland Center, and some are available
at various retail locations throughout the county.
