Richland County is the “Wisconsin” that everybody's
talking about! Long ago, the Ocooch Mountains
survived the glaciers, and to our benefit, that
provided us with the steeply wooded hillsides, lush valleys,
rich farmland, and many beautiful sandstone and limestone
bluffs for which Richland County is known. We also have
over 267 miles of naturally stocked trout streams and
wonderful habitat areas for our deer and wild turkey
populations. Bird watchers delight in the variety
and number of birds, including pheasants, quail,
kingfishers, eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, finches,
herons, cranes, owls, and more. And if variety is what
you're looking for, we not only have a wide variety of
cattle, but you’ll find horses, alpacas, llamas, sheep,
and bison here as well.
In Richland County you live and breathe the
wholesomeness of small town America, a blend of
ethnic-rich cultural and rural heritage. As you roam the
back roads, people wave at you from their fields and porches,
they greet you on the sidewalks and in stores, and you may
even find that you feel more at home here than you do at home.
Richland County is on the Highway 14 scenic route
between LaCrosse and Madison. We’re also halfway between

ride. Our roads and highways are
among the most scenic in the country,
winding along valley bottoms, flanked
by towering hills, climbing the ridges,
dipping down into the hollows and then
back to the top of the hills. Backroad
enthusiasts return year after year
for the panoramic views offered at
every turn. Our hardwood forests are
rich with vibrant fall colors from late
September through mid-October. The
farm fields offer their own display of
patchwork quilts in the fall, made up
of yellow, gold, brown and green, and
draped over the valleys. Springtime in
Richland County is noted for wildflower
blooms, the scent of honeysuckle,
and the apple blossoms that are so
abundant in May.
