Monroe’s downtown square is the place to be for shopping, dining, and events<br />

- including concerts on the square, antique car shows, and a chili cook-<strong>of</strong>f the first<br />

weekend in October. Shoppers will find everything from art to antiques to apparel.<br />

Take a self-guided tour <strong>of</strong> the Green County Courthouse, and stop for a photo opp<br />

at the judge’s bench in the former courtroom - complete with robe and gavel. Take<br />

open this year upstairs next to the former courtroom. For more about the history<br />

<strong>of</strong> Monroe, visit the Green County Historical Society museum, located in an 1861<br />

church, and the Little Red Schoolhouse country school - both near the downtown<br />

square. Also nearby is Turner Hall, a shrine to the area’s Swiss heritage. Turner<br />

Hall features an authentic ratskeller, and hosts bands nearly every Sunday<br />

afternoon with the best dance floor in the area.<br />

Discover cheese in Monroe! See cheese being made weekday mornings at<br />

Alp and Dell Cheese. New this year - step right into an authentic old time<br />

farmstead factory to learn about how cheese was made in the early 1900s.<br />

Recently relocated to the grounds <strong>of</strong> the National Historic Cheesemaking Center,<br />

the Imobersteg farmstead cheese factory was used to make Limburger, Brick, and<br />

Swiss cheese.<br />

The city is home to two performance venues – the Monroe Arts Center (which<br />

includes a gallery with a variety <strong>of</strong> exhibits throughout the year), and Monroe<br />

Guests also enjoy the city parks, easy access to the Badger State Trail, and<br />

Monticello<br />

Visitors in Monticello enjoy the<br />

beauty <strong>of</strong> Lake Montesian. An island<br />

in the 14-acre lake is accessible by a<br />

footbridge, and the surrounding park<br />

provides a scenic backdrop for a picnic<br />

or relaxing afternoon. Stroll through<br />

the nearby Montesian Gardens, or relax<br />

in the gazebo and enjoy the variety <strong>of</strong><br />

blooms for all seasons from early Spring<br />

until Fall frost.<br />

The Sugar River State Trail winds<br />

along the east edge <strong>of</strong> the village and<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a rest stop at a restored railroad<br />

site. Monticello is also home to the<br />

Green County Vietnam War Memorial.<br />
