Potosi – Tennyson
The Potosi-Tennyson area is a scenic area rich in history. The two
communities date back to the lead mining days of the 1830s and 1840s. St. John
Mine, a national historic site, is one of the oldest lead mines in the state. The new
American Brewery Museum, opened to the public in July of 2008, is located in
the restored Potosi Brewery. Tastes of five different brews of beer and root beer
are available at the unique Great Room restaurant on site. Hear stories about
the many steamships that docked at the “Port of Potosi”. Gift shop and Great
River Road Interpretative Center are also located in the main building. Handicap
accessible with elevator. Open weekly 7 days from 9 a.m.
If you’re looking for a place to camp, try the Grant River Recreation Area.
This 73-campsite park is run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is located
on the Mississippi. The park has a boat ramp and is ideal for viewing the beautiful
Mississippi sunsets.
Potosi, set in a long narrow valley,

intersection in the world! The annual
Potosi Catfish Festival is held the
second weekend of August, and each
year the local fire department serves
over a ton of locally caught catfish.

Sinsinawa
Sinsinawa Mound has been the
home of the Sinsinawa Dominican
Sisters for over 150 years. This order
of religious women was founded by
Father Samuel Mazzuchelli in 1847,
and since that time the Mound has
served as an educational and cultural
landmark within Grant County. Today
Sinsinawa Mound hosts retreats and
meetings for small or large groups,
and continues to promote culture and
education through its many ministries.
