Readstown<br />

Readstown is the southernmost<br />

village in Vernon County. The historic<br />

village <strong>of</strong> Readstown is located at the<br />

junction Highways 131, 14 & 61.<br />

Founded in 1849, it is at the heart<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Kickapoo Valley. It has three<br />

historic cemeteries including a Civil War<br />

Cemetery. Visitors can use Readstown<br />

as their base for exploring the wonders<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Kickapoo Valley and the <strong>Hidden</strong><br />

<strong>Valleys</strong> <strong>of</strong> Vernon County. Rental cabins,<br />

RV and tent camping are available as well<br />

as public camping. Paddlers are <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

lots <strong>of</strong> options for canoe and kayak trips.<br />

They can choose to be shuttled upriver<br />

to Viola and float down to Readstown,<br />

launch at Readstown to paddle several<br />

hours, or stay out on extended canoe/<br />

camping trips <strong>of</strong> several days, ending at the conflux <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Wisconsin</strong> River and<br />

the Wauzeka Wildlife Refuge.<br />

Readstown <strong>of</strong>fers a fine riverside park with an outdoor horse arena,<br />

where weekly gymkhanas are held for youth. S<strong>of</strong>tball games are a summerlong<br />

tradition in the park, which features a shelter house and playground equipment.<br />

Viola<br />

In the heart <strong>of</strong> the Kickapoo Valley lies Viola, population 703. Viola sits<br />

nestled amidst the bluffs along the picturesque Kickapoo River, located at<br />

the junction <strong>of</strong> State Highways 131 and 56.<br />

Camping is available in the park with electric hookup and free public<br />

showers. Outdoor activities are plentiful, including canoeing, hiking,<br />

bicycling, hunting, and some <strong>of</strong> the best Class 2 trout fishing in the area.<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> bed and breakfasts are located in the area as well.<br />

The small rural community is host to the unique Viola Horse and Colt<br />

Show, held annually the third weekend after Labor Day. Viola will celebrate<br />

the show’s 81stth anniversary in 2011. Yearly highlights include the horse<br />
