Green County Cheese
Say Cheese!
(And Beer)
Years ago, a cheese factory at
every crossroads was as common
as holes in a wheel of Swiss cheese.
In the early 1900s, the number of
factories in Green County peaked at
just over 200. Today, we are home
to about a dozen factories, with
several offering morning tours, and
most offering factory direct sales of
many varieties of delicious cheese,
affectionately referred to as “Green
County Gold”.
Green County is home to the
nation’s only Limburger cheese
factory, and the only factory producing
giant wheels of traditional Swiss
cheese. Many other types of cheese
are produced, including several
types made exclusively from the milk
of Brown Swiss cows. The Green
County Agricultural Chest provides
ambassadors known as “Dairy
Queens” to promote dairy and other
local agricultural products.
