Hazel Green
Establish in 1824, Hazel Green is Wisconsin’s “Point of Beginning” – the
place where the land survey began in 1831. Just outside of town lies the Point
of Beginning Historical Marker. Many of Hazel Green’s historic buildings remain,
including the Wisconsin House (1846) and the Opera House/Town Hall (1898).
Lancaster
Lancaster is situated in an area known for its rolling hills and picturesque
valleys. Lancaster is home to the Grant County Fair held in August. Check the
website: grantcountyfairwi.org. The county fairgrounds also hosts a number
of community activities such as the high school rodeo, musical performances,
arts and craft festivals, and numerous agricultural events. A stroll around the
courthouse square, located in downtown Lancaster, can carry the visitor to an
earlier time in our history. Inside the courthouse building, the rotunda and
murals are striking examples of public building architecture. The grounds of the
courthouse contain statues and monuments attesting to the rich history of the
area.
Another historical landmark in Lancaster is the City Hall, which is on the
National Register of Historic Places. This striking building is an example of
prairie-style architecture which was popular in the early 1900s. Visitors can
see many beautiful older homes with
architectural styles ranging from
Frank Lloyd Wright to Queen Anne.
