The Deke Slayton Memorial Highway lies on Highway 27,
between Cashton and Sparta. Donald “Deke” Slayton,
one of the original Mercury astronauts, was born on
a farm in the Town of Leon, attended the Leon School and graduated
from Sparta High School. In 1959 he was chosen as one of the Mercury
7 – America’s first astronauts. He was commander of the first
Soviet-American joint space mission – the Apollo-Soyuz project in
1975. Deke died of cancer in 1993.
Historic bike trails with cavernous tunnels, an Amish community,
thousands of acres of cranberries, Fort McCoy, numerous museums,
and great hunting and fishing opportunities, lure visitors from
across the nation to Monroe County.
Cashton
The Village of Cashton, home to just over 1,000 people,
is set atop some of the most scenic hills in southwestern
Wisconsin, and the surrounding townships are home to the
largest Amish community in Wisconsin.
Discover the unique treasures this area holds as you drive
through Amish country. Be careful of slow moving horse drawn
wagons winding on country roads as you catch a glimpse of a
heritage and culture thriving at its own pace.

Handcrafted Amish goods, including
baked goodies, quilts, furniture and
baskets can be found by taking the
country roads. Be sure to include a stop
at Old Country Cheese, where you can
watch cheese being made and sample
some of their fine fresh curd made daily.
It is one of only a few factories left in
the United States that handles only fresh
can milk.
Pasture Pride Cheese –home of
“Juusto” –the award winning baked
cheese is located on Highway 27, just
south of Cashton. Watch for “Milton the
Mouse” in front of their store.
Cashton boasts a bed and breakfast
establishment; several restaurants
and Amish tour services. The work
of local artisans can be found in area
businesses.
