The Deke Slayton Memorial Highway lies on Highway 27,<br />
between Cashton and Sparta. Donald “Deke” Slayton,<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the original Mercury astronauts, was born on<br />
a farm in the Town <strong>of</strong> Leon, attended the Leon School and graduated<br />
from Sparta High School. In 1959 he was chosen as one <strong>of</strong> the Mercury<br />
7 – America’s first astronauts. He was commander <strong>of</strong> the first<br />
Soviet-American joint space mission – the Apollo-Soyuz project in<br />
1975. Deke died <strong>of</strong> cancer in 1993.<br />
Historic bike trails with cavernous tunnels, an Amish community,<br />
thousands <strong>of</strong> acres <strong>of</strong> cranberries, Fort McCoy, numerous museums,<br />
and great hunting and fishing opportunities, lure visitors from<br />
across the nation to Monroe County.<br />
Cashton<br />
The Village <strong>of</strong> Cashton, home to just over 1,000 people,<br />
is set atop some <strong>of</strong> the most scenic hills in southwestern<br />
<strong>Wisconsin</strong>, and the surrounding townships are home to the<br />
largest Amish community in <strong>Wisconsin</strong>.<br />
Discover the unique treasures this area holds as you drive<br />
through Amish country. Be careful <strong>of</strong> slow moving horse drawn<br />
wagons winding on country roads as you catch a glimpse <strong>of</strong> a<br />
heritage and culture thriving at its own pace.<br />

Handcrafted Amish goods, including<br />
baked goodies, quilts, furniture and<br />
baskets can be found by taking the<br />
country roads. Be sure to include a stop<br />
at Old Country Cheese, where you can<br />
watch cheese being made and sample<br />
some <strong>of</strong> their fine fresh curd made daily.<br />
It is one <strong>of</strong> only a few factories left in<br />
the United States that handles only fresh<br />
can milk.<br />
Pasture Pride Cheese –home <strong>of</strong><br />
“Juusto” –the award winning baked<br />
cheese is located on Highway 27, just<br />
south <strong>of</strong> Cashton. Watch for “Milton the<br />
Mouse” in front <strong>of</strong> their store.<br />
Cashton boasts a bed and breakfast<br />
establishment; several restaurants<br />
and Amish tour services. The work<br />
<strong>of</strong> local artisans can be found in area<br />
businesses.<br />
