would be able to rewind the announcement
tape almost instantaneously in order
to check his message or re-record it. This
facility saves time and makes it much easici
to dictate an announcement message that
sounds natural and unforced, and will be
easily understood.
All machines have limitations, especialh
those in the early developmental years. The
early models of telephone automatic answering
equipment had their full share of
limitations, some of them quite annoying.
The early users just had to learn to live
with them, as the technology to eliminate
them had not yet been created. That is no
longer the case, and a number of new optional
capabilities have been added, extending
the acceptability of TA equipment into
many new areas of use.
To the newcomer to TA equipment, the
significance of some of those improvements
will not be apparent immediately. However,
it is important that one considering a machine
should decide which improvements
are important to him, since they are not
uniformly available on all machines on the
market. Their presence or absence often
determines in part the cost of the machine,
but that is by no means invariably the case.
The basic improvements are standard on
some machines but not on others, and some
optional improvements are not available at
all in some product lines.

One important improvement is the variable
length announcement message, controlled
automatically. In earlier models, and
in a number of current machines as well,
the announcement tape of the basic answerand-record
machine is of fixed duration,
such as 18 seconds. That is a typical average
time for most announcement messages and
entirely sufficient for most purposes but
there are disadvantages.
For example, the user has to learn to get
it all down in that time span, or keep redictating
it until he does. It is even more
important with a machine like this not to
make the message too short. If it lasts only
12 seconds, for example, the announcement
tape continues to run for its full cycle, the
machine being silent for the last six seconds.
A caller not knowledgeable about such
things might start putting his own message
onto the machine before it is able to receive
it. Then, when the owner retrieves the message,
the first part would be missing including,
perhaps, the all-important name and
telephone number for him to return the call.
With the variable length announcement
having, typically, a maximum duration of
about 30 seconds, the user has greater latitude
and time for a relaxed and easy delivery.
Moreover, he does not have to use
the full length of the tape. No matter what
the message length—from 1 to 30 seconds
—the announcement tape will stop receiving
when the "record" control is released.
