<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Catharines</strong> Policy <strong>St</strong>atement for Community Development<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Catharines</strong> is a community that supports recreation and community<br />

development. It is also a community where an enriched, secure quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> life is valued and actively fostered. The growth and development<br />

<strong>of</strong> healthy communities and neighbourhoods requires consistent<br />

and continued communication to assess and meet the needs, and to<br />

maximize efficient and effective use <strong>of</strong> available resources. Increasingly<br />

active involvement <strong>of</strong> individuals and communities in planning and<br />

making decisions that are important to them, will guide the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>.<br />

<strong>Catharines</strong> Recreation and Community Services Department’s approach<br />

to providing services.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the aims <strong>of</strong> the Recreation and Community Services Department<br />

is to create opportunities and encourage residents to contribute to<br />

their community through volunteering. Volunteers not only help the<br />

participants in programs, they also gain a great sense <strong>of</strong> personal<br />

satisfaction and accomplishment. For more information, please call the<br />

Neighbourhood Associations<br />

Neighbourhood Recreation Associations <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong> programs and<br />

special events to their community. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the neighbourhood<br />

associations is to promote and support the concept <strong>of</strong> neighbourhood<br />

involvement in the provision <strong>of</strong> services that are seen as fair,<br />

equitable and inclusive in nature. If you are interested in forming a<br />

neighbourhood association, or would like your association to be included<br />

in our brochure, please call the Community Relations Supervisor<br />

at 905 688-5601 ext. 1915.<br />

Walker’s Creek Neighbourhood Association<br />

A volunteer membership association that provides a variety <strong>of</strong> programs,<br />

bringing residents together for Community Meetings on various<br />

topics, <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>St</strong>ar Gazing Nights, Plant Sales, organizing Work Parties<br />

helping to enhance the string <strong>of</strong> seven connected Parks with pathways<br />

from Grantham Avenue to the Lake, following the meandering Walker’s<br />

Creek. Encouraging use <strong>of</strong> the Parks for strolling, jogging, cycling,<br />

Geocaching, Playgrounds, dog walking and enjoyment <strong>of</strong> the peaceful<br />

natural areas reflecting the original Carolinian forest habitat. Known<br />

as “The WCNA”, the Association works cooperatively with <strong>City</strong> Departments<br />

and <strong>St</strong>aff to ensure safety, suggests improvements, manage<br />

concerns, and encourage participation that brings people together for<br />

mutual enjoyment and involvement. The WCNA Website<br />

(www.wcna.ca) <strong>of</strong>fers regular news, views and notices <strong>of</strong> events.
