Bees <strong>in</strong> a hive<br />

"[The swarm] actually k<strong>in</strong>d of looked like shwarma on a turn<strong>in</strong>g spit. You know to have this hang<strong>in</strong>g cluster of 30,000<br />

bees is really <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g because <strong>the</strong> cluster is mov<strong>in</strong>g and it's alive."<br />

Illegal or not, bee and honey enthusiasts have been tend<strong>in</strong>g apiaries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city for years. This March, however,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y got <strong>the</strong>ir moment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spotlight when <strong>the</strong> Department of Mental Health and Hygiene lifted <strong>the</strong> ban on<br />

beekeep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. These newly legal kept-bees spent <strong>the</strong> short spr<strong>in</strong>g months ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g nectar. So now is<br />

<strong>the</strong> time to enjoy <strong>the</strong> fruits of <strong>the</strong>ir labors — spr<strong>in</strong>g honey.<br />

Annie Novak, who runs Eagle Street Rooftop Farm and founded Grow<strong>in</strong>g Chefs, is one of <strong>the</strong> rogue<br />

beekeepers who ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed hives even before it became legal. Novak (pictured below) recently told WNYC's<br />

Amy Edd<strong>in</strong>gs that forg<strong>in</strong>g ahead despite <strong>the</strong> ban wasn't a problem, s<strong>in</strong>ce it was "one of those wonderful laws<br />

that didn't make sense."<br />

Honey bees, <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>the</strong> Italian variety that are legal to keep <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, are not aggressive. That's what<br />

Ava Ch<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Urban Forager columnist for The New York Times' City Room blog, discovered this spr<strong>in</strong>g, when<br />

she came across a swarm of bees on The College of Staten Island's campus. "[The swarm] actually k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />

looked like shwarma on a turn<strong>in</strong>g spit," Ch<strong>in</strong> said. "You know to have this hang<strong>in</strong>g cluster of 30,000 bees is<br />

really <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g because <strong>the</strong> cluster is mov<strong>in</strong>g and it's alive."<br />
