STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Have a plan to achieve your dreams, take responsibility for your life, don’t run from <strong>the</strong> hard problems, and be committed to your goals. That was some of <strong>the</strong> advice dispensed to graduates of <strong>the</strong> Class of 2010 of Ralph J. McKee Career and Technical High School, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir commencement ceremony <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. George Theatre. "Practice <strong>the</strong> Four Ps: Plan, practice, prepare and present," Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Sharon Henry told <strong>the</strong> 125 graduates, clad <strong>in</strong> green robes with gold sat<strong>in</strong> sashes. "Beware of bad role models who have all <strong>the</strong> answers," she admonished. "Success," she said, is "more than a Beamer, Benz or Bentley," referenc<strong>in</strong>g luxury cars, "you’ve got to earn it." Commencement speaker Sterl<strong>in</strong>g Roberson, vice-president for career and technical education for <strong>the</strong> United Federation of Teachers, told <strong>the</strong> class to give <strong>the</strong>mselves a pat on <strong>the</strong> back for putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir education first. "You are <strong>the</strong> best of <strong>the</strong> best. Congratulate yourselves on your unbelievable achievement," he said. Page 130 of 154
He spoke about grow<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South Bronx with six bro<strong>the</strong>rs and sisters <strong>in</strong> a 1½-bedroom apartment near <strong>the</strong> Bronx Zoo. "But we all knew that our education was <strong>the</strong> most important th<strong>in</strong>g," he said. Roberson quoted his fa<strong>the</strong>r. "My dad always told us ‘I will do today what o<strong>the</strong>rs won’t, so I can do tomorrow what o<strong>the</strong>rs can’t.’" Salutatorian Mark Weisner, who received a four-year scholarship to <strong>the</strong> College of Staten Island, said <strong>the</strong> enthusiasm and dedication of his teachers dur<strong>in</strong>g his four years at McKee leaves him well-prepared for <strong>the</strong> future. He aspires to a career <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction and build<strong>in</strong>g trade or as a city firefighter. He also said his career and technical education gave him "respect for <strong>the</strong> quality of hands-on work." Weisner, who won <strong>the</strong> Super<strong>in</strong>tendent’s Academic Excellence Award, also paid tribute to his parents, not<strong>in</strong>g his dad is also a McKee graduate. Graduates Malcolm Daniels and Earl L<strong>in</strong>dsey were presented with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>augural Frank DeSantis Memorial Award named <strong>in</strong> honor of <strong>the</strong> late educator who taught at McKee for more than 27 years. Valedictorian Husse<strong>in</strong> Hamouche rem<strong>in</strong>ded his classmates that while <strong>the</strong>y have reached <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>ir high school journey, "<strong>the</strong> end of one journey is <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of ano<strong>the</strong>r." He said his shop classes at McKee taught him <strong>the</strong> value of teamwork, <strong>the</strong> importance of meet<strong>in</strong>g deadl<strong>in</strong>es, and <strong>the</strong> importance of mak<strong>in</strong>g accurate computations on <strong>the</strong> job. While he said he "values <strong>the</strong> friendships" made <strong>in</strong> high school, Hamouche also took a moment to thank his parents for <strong>the</strong>ir love and support. "Let us revel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> freedom to choose <strong>the</strong> path to our success," he said, and have "<strong>the</strong> courage and determ<strong>in</strong>ation to be <strong>the</strong> person we are meant to be."
