president of California State University, Stanislaus.<br />

Charlie Nelms, chancellor of North Carol<strong>in</strong>a Central University, commented, “The best way to grow<br />

<strong>the</strong> enrollment is to reta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> students.”<br />

In response to a question from audience member William E. Kirwan, chancellor of <strong>the</strong> Maryland<br />

University System, about <strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>the</strong> residential student experience, Nelms said, “It’s<br />

absolutely essential.”<br />

His school is now build<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r residence hall and is explor<strong>in</strong>g public/private partnerships to<br />

provide additional residential opportunities for students, Nelms po<strong>in</strong>ted out.<br />

Randy J. Dunn, president of Murray State University, noted his school requires every student to live<br />

on campus for his or her first two years of matriculation, say<strong>in</strong>g residence life is essential to a<br />

successful transition <strong>in</strong>to college.<br />

Morales agreed that <strong>the</strong> more ties that b<strong>in</strong>d a student to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution, <strong>the</strong> better chance <strong>the</strong>re is of<br />

that student earn<strong>in</strong>g a degree. He said statistics <strong>in</strong>dicate students who live and/or work on campus<br />

graduate at a significantly higher rate than those who live and work away from <strong>the</strong> school.<br />

SREB president Dave Spence said <strong>in</strong> his <strong>in</strong>troductory remarks <strong>the</strong> organization had “pretty much<br />

given up on com<strong>in</strong>g back” to The Greenbrier for a meet<strong>in</strong>g, but was lured by both <strong>the</strong> governor’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>vitation and an attractive rate package offered by <strong>the</strong> resort.<br />

Asked after <strong>the</strong> Sunday session what was <strong>the</strong> decid<strong>in</strong>g factor <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> SREB back to The<br />

Greenbrier, Manch<strong>in</strong> said with a laugh, “Me be<strong>in</strong>g chairman.”<br />

He elaborated, “I enjoy br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g everyone here to The Greenbrier. They get to see all <strong>the</strong> wonderful<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia has to offer.”<br />

The governor said he plans to spend a lot of time at <strong>the</strong> White Sulphur Spr<strong>in</strong>gs resort over <strong>the</strong> next<br />

month, cit<strong>in</strong>g Friday’s gala mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> grand open<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> long-awaited Cas<strong>in</strong>o Club, as well as<br />

<strong>the</strong> upcom<strong>in</strong>g Greenbrier Classic PGA Tour event, which will beg<strong>in</strong> July 26.<br />

Based <strong>in</strong> Atlanta, <strong>the</strong> SREB was created <strong>in</strong> 1948 by sou<strong>the</strong>rn governors and legislatures to help<br />

leaders <strong>in</strong> education and government work cooperatively to advance education and improve <strong>the</strong><br />

social and economic life of <strong>the</strong> region. Member states are Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida,<br />

Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carol<strong>in</strong>a, Oklahoma, South Carol<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

Tennessee, Texas, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia and West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia.<br />

The organization’s annual meet<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ues today and concludes Tuesday.<br />
