Ms. Dennie, who has been breed<strong>in</strong>g and compet<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce 1986, noted that "<strong>the</strong> most important th<strong>in</strong>g is that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y (<strong>the</strong> dog) are somebody's pet, that <strong>the</strong>y give love and receive love."<br />

Though it was 90 degrees yesterday, that didn't stop <strong>the</strong> dogs from enjoy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves. Abel, a 65-pound<br />

German shepherd, bit playfully at water as his owner, Krist<strong>in</strong> Siarkowicz of Long Island, hosed him down <strong>in</strong> a<br />

kiddie pool.<br />

Staff, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g student volunteers from <strong>the</strong> CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities, were on hand to<br />

help out. Next year, <strong>the</strong> show's fee will <strong>in</strong>crease to $10 to benefit a scholarship fund for those CUNY<br />

students.<br />

Also yesterday, <strong>the</strong> Sandy Ground Historical Society held its annual festival at 1538 Woodrow Rd.<br />

Attendees enjoyed tours of <strong>the</strong> exhibit, "Faces of <strong>the</strong> Underground Railroad." There were also musical<br />

performances of contemporary and jazz as well as a steel band at <strong>the</strong> Woodrow museum. For children, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were arts and crafts.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> Conference House Park hosted its <strong>in</strong>augural Raritan Bay Festival. As a nod to <strong>the</strong> Tottenville<br />

establishment's history and cont<strong>in</strong>ued mission to be ecologically responsible, <strong>the</strong> festival <strong>in</strong>cluded many<br />

outdoor activities. There was kayak<strong>in</strong>g, music, a puppet show, fish<strong>in</strong>g tutorials, tours and an arts and crafts<br />

fair.<br />

T<strong>in</strong>a Johnstone, founder of Kayak Staten Island, suggested <strong>the</strong> event. Her organization led a program on<br />

paddl<strong>in</strong>g a kayak <strong>in</strong> a roped off area. David Mills, who is a builder of kayaks and wooden paddles, was on<br />

hand.<br />
