Przez kilka wieków na rozwój Bristolu wpływ mieli żeglarze
i przemysł stoczniowy. Dziś duży port przeładunkowy
funkcjonuje 8 km od historycznego centrum, a dawne
doki i przystanie przekształcone zostały w nowoczesne
centra kulturalne i handlowe. Zakryto fragment rzeki,
po której jeszcze sto lat temu pływały statki, ale uczyniono
to tak, by w pejzażu miasta pozostawała jego przeszłość.
W tym miejscu z ziemi wynurzają się potężne maszty z żaglami
– plastyczna instalacja, nawiązująca do charakteru
miasta pociętego kanałami, położonego po obu brzegach
rzeki Avon.
Bristol liczy około 400 tysięcy mieszkańców. Rocznie odwiedza
go 9 mln turystów. W czasie nawet krótkiego pobytu
dostrzec mogą różne oblicza miasta. W krajobrazie
pozostają wspaniałe, monumentalne zabytki i nowoczesne
budowle. Gotycka katedra z XII wieku, domy
z XV i XVI wieku, gmach Lloyds Banku, zabudowania targowe,
dawny spichlerz - to wspaniałe dziedzictwo, którego
przeoczyć nie można.
Nowoczesne i drogie apartamentowce powstają wzdłuż
rzeki. Na placu Milenijnym (Millennium Square) stanęło
planetarium oraz urządzenie stale informujące przechodniów
o tym, w jakiej odległości od Bristolu znajduje się
właśnie najbliższy satelita.
Niekwestionowanym symbolem miasta jest imponujący

For several centuries shipbuilding and sailors were the main
influence on Bristol’s development. Today, the large reloading
port functions 8km from the historical centre,
and the old docks and piers have been converted into
modern shopping and cultural centres. Although a fragment
of the river, along which ships still travelled 100 years
ago, has been covered to form the Floating Harbour,
the cityscape continues to show its historical past. Huge
masts with sails emerge from where the river’s been covered
– an artistic installation referring to the character of
a city straddling the River Avon, dissected by canals.
Bristol has a population of about 400 000 people and is
visited annually by 9 million tourists. In even a short stay it’s
possible to see several different aspects of the city – both
monumental historic buildings and modern architecture.
The Gothic cathedral from the 12th century, houses from
the 15th and 16th centuries, the edifice of Lloyds Bank, the
markets and the old granary are top of the ‘must-see’ list
for visitors.
Modern and very expensive apartment blocks are being
built along the river. A planetarium has been built at the
Millennium Square, as well as a device informing passersby
how far, at that moment, the nearest satellite is from Bristol.
