prawie 150 lat temu, już pięć lat po śmierci młodego projektanta,
brytyjskiego inżyniera Isambarda Kingdom Brunela. Długość
przęsła – 214 m, całego mostu spinającego brzegi rzeki
Avon – 400 m. Wznosi się nad poziomem wody na wysokość
75 m. Przy wejściu na most jest tablica informująca, że
„jeśli chciałbyś porozmawiać, dzwoń...” i tu podany jest
numer telefonu. Dwustu samobójców skoczyło w dół rzeki,
przeważnie kobiety. Przewodnik twierdzi, że przeżyła tylko
jedna, ponad siedemdziesięcioletnia kobieta, której rozłożysta
spódnica przybrała postać spadochronu i uratowała desperatkę.
O morskiej potędze Bristolu przypomina m.in. statek muzeum
– ss Great Britain, pierwszy stalowy transatlantyk, zwodowany
w 1843 roku. Przewiózł bodaj najwięcej emigrantów do Ameryki
i Australii. Trasę do Nowego Jorku pokonywał w ciągu
dwóch tygodni, zabierając na pokład 600 osób. W 1970 roku
zacumował w suchym doku, w swoim macierzystym porcie
- Bristolu. Warto zobaczyć, w jak obrazowy sposób przygotowano
go do zwiedzania. Mamy wrażenie, że właśnie stoi
u nabrzeża i przyjmuje na pokład kolejnych podróżnych. Roznoszą
się nawet zapachy charakterystyczne dla danych pomieszczeń.
Na manekinach stroje z epoki, bo czas się tutaj
zatrzymał. Widać, w jak trudnych warunkach podróżowali pasażerowie
drugiej i trzeciej klasy. Bogacze też na luksusy liczyć
nie mogli, choć przestrzeni do życia mieli nieco więcej.
Każdego roku w sierpniu odbywa się w Bristolu słynny
na całym świecie zlot balonów – The Discovery Channel International
Balloon Fiesta. W ostatnich latach gospodarka miasta
opiera się także o przemysł lotniczy – tu produkowany był
samolot Concorde, a obecnie skrzydła do Airbusów. Bristol
jest też ważnym ośrodkiem naukowym, ma dwa uniwersytety.
W 2008 roku Bristol będzie Europejską Stolicą Kultury i ma ku
temu wszelkie powody. Specjalny program: „Destination Bristol”
ma przyciągnąć do miasta nowych turystów.
Do Bristolu lata od listopada tani przewoźnik – Ryanair. Po
2 godzinach i 15 minutach Boeing 737- 800 ląduje na międzynarodowym
lotnisku, położonym zaledwie 10 km od centrum
miasta. Pokonanie drogi do zabytkowej części Bristolu
– taksówką czy autobusem – zajmie maksymalnie pół godziny.
Oficjalnie w Bristolu pracuje już 18 tysięcy Polaków, na czarno
drugie tyle. Jest polski kościół i polskie sklepy. Pracujących rodaków
spotkamy na każdym niemal kroku, a zwłaszcza w pubach
i sklepach. Jest tu także polskie piwo – Tyskie i Żywiec.
Wybierając się poza miasto warto odwiedzić odległe 20 km
Bath, gdzie do kąpieli wykorzystuje się naturalne, gorące źródła.
Zawierają 37 minerałów o właściwościach wzmacniających
i rewitalizujących. Ich zalety poznali już Rzymianie.
Dawne łaźnie rzymskie to dziś pomieszczenia muzealne,
ale nowoczesne – imponują rozmachem organizacyjnym.
Woda ma 47 0 C, a pływać można nawet na dachu w otwartym
basenie.
Kolejna atrakcja znajduje się w odległości ponad 30 km od Bristolu.
Miejscowość Cheddar znana jest z produkcji sera, klifów
i jaskiń, udostępnionych do zwiedzania. Wystawa
o prehistorycznym człowieku i podziemne trasy są przygotowane
tak, by poziom adrenaliny wciąż wzrastał.

years ago, 5 years after the death of its young designer,
the British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The span of the
bridge is 214m, but the length of the entire bridge joining
both sides of the Avon – 400m and hangs 75m above the waterline.
As you approach the bridge, there’s a board with
‘If you’d like to talk ring...’ written on it, together with a phone
number. 200 people have committed suicide by jumping from
the bridge – most of them women. A guide book mentions
that only one person has survived the fall – a 70 year
old woman, whose wide skirt acted like a parachute thus
saving her life.
The ss Great Britain and its museum remind us of Bristol’s importance
in maritime history. It was the world’s first oceangoing,
propeller-driven iron ship and was launched in 1843.
Apparently it transported the largest number of emigrants to
America and Australia. It was able to cut travel time to New
York down to 2 weeks and was able to carry 600 passengers.
In 1970, it was put into dry dock, in its home port – Bristol.
It’s worth seeing how vividly it has been prepared for viewing.
You get the feeling that it’s simply waiting for its next load of
passengers. Even the smells wafting through each area are
characteristic to that particular section and mannequins stand
in period costume – time has stood still. You can see how difficult
the conditions were for 2nd and 3rd class passengers.
Rich people, too, couldn’t count on luxuries, but the quarters
were a little bigger.
Every August, Bristol holds the world’s largest hot air balloon
festival – the Discovery Channel International Balloon Fiesta.
Bristol’s economy also relies on the aerospace industry.
The Concorde was produced mainly in Bristol and currently,
Airbus’ wings are made here. With its two universities, Bristol
is also an important educational centre in the region.
Bristol, with good reason, has been chosen to be the European
Capital of Culture in 2008. A special programme,‘Destination
Bristol’, is being developed to attract tourists to the area. From
November 2007 Ryanair is flying from Katowice to Bristol.
After just 2 hours and 15 minutes, the Boeing 737-800 lands
at the International Airport situated just 10km from the city
centre – it’s less than half an hour from the airport by taxi or
bus to the historic district.
Officially, already 18 000 Polish people work in Bristol – another
18 000 do so illegally. There’s a Polish church and Polish
shops. You can meet Poles who are working in Bristol at
almost every step – particularly in the pubs and shops where
you can even buy Polish beer – Tyskie and Żywiec.
It’s also worth seeing the historic areas in and around Bath
which is only 20km away. It takes its name from the natural
hot spring spas which are still in use. These waters contain
37 minerals which strengthen and revitalise the body. The Romans
are known to have been aware of their powers. The old
Roman baths are now part of the museum. The water has a
constant temperature of 47 0 C and you can even swim in an
open pool on the roof
Another attraction about 30km from Bristol is Cheddar –
known for its cheese, cliffs and caves that are open to visitors.
The way in which one particular exhibition about prehistoric
man with underground walking trails is prepared guarantees
a continual rise in adrenaline!
