jest pozostałością zaginionej
Atlantydy, a Guanczowie potomkami
jej mieszkańców. Podbijający
wyspy Kanaryjskie Hiszpanie
nie przejęli się tajemniczą starożytnością
tubylców i wybili ich dokładnie.

kształt trójkąta, który ktoś mocno
pociągnął¸ za prawy dolny róg. Wyspę
ogrzewa ciepły Golfsztrom, a lekko
ochładza prąd Kanaryjski, co daje iście
rajski klimat. Dokładnie na środku Teneryfy
piętrzy się wulkan El Pico de Teide,
który swym szczytem (3718 m) przerósł Pireneje i jest
najwyższym wierzchołkiem Hiszpanii, a także jedną
z dwóch jego największych turystycznych atrakcji. Do wysokości
przeszło 2,5 km można tam wjechać samochodem, a dalej
pod szczyt górską kolejką, która wspina się tam 8 minut.
Do samego krateru wstęp jest wzbroniony. Pico del Teide
po raz ostatnio wybuchł w roku 1909, a więc dość dawno, ale
to jednak nadal wulkan w pełni czynny.
Wspaniałym miejscem do zwiedzania jest Loro Parque, położony
na obrzeżu Puerto de la Cruz w północnej, zielonej części

The Paradise of Atlantis
In the 15th Century, on the island now known as
Tenerife, lived a strange people – the Guanches. With
blond hair and blue eyes, their appearance differed
markedly from the peoples of nearby Africa. Much
could be explained by the theory that Tenerife is,
in fact, what remains of lost Atlantis, and the Guanches
their descendents. The Canary Islands’ Spanish conquerors
cared little for this secretive ancient peoples and
slayed all remaining inhabitants.
Tenerife, resembling a triangle with its lower right corner
stretched, is the largest island in the Canary Archipelago.
The island is heated by the warm Gulfstream and cooled by
the Canaries Stream, the result of which is climatic paradise.
Occupying the very centre of Tenerife is the El Pico de Teide
Volcano, whose summit (3718m), higher than the Pyrenees,
is also Spain’s highest peak and one of the island’s major
tourist attractions. It is possible to ascend the first 2500m of
the volcano by car, and conquer the remaining distance to the
summit in an 8-minute cable car journey. Entry into the actual
crater, however, is prohibited. Pico de Teide last errupted quite
a long time ago, in 1909, but continues to be classified as an
active volcano.
Another wonderful place to visit is Loro Parque, situated on
the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz, on the lush northern coast
of the island. Loro Parque is the most beautiful botanical park
and zoo one could possibly imagine. Alligators and sharks can
be observed from tunnels within the aquarium. Parrots of vi-
