May 1981 Milka Planinc succeeds Veselin Djuranović as head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

government.<br />

October 1982 Introduction <strong>of</strong> the “border tax” for foreign trips.<br />

February 1985 Branko Mikulić becomes new head <strong>of</strong> the government.<br />

February 1986 Slobodan Milošević becomes Serbian party chief.<br />

April 1986 Milan Kučan becomes Slovenian party chief and Azem Vllasi<br />

becomes party chief in Kosovo.<br />

May 1986 Stanko Stojčević becomes party chief in Croatia.<br />

End <strong>of</strong> September 1987 Slobodan Milošević becomes sole ruler in Serbia, at<br />

the Eighth Plenum <strong>of</strong> the Central Committee <strong>of</strong> the Serbian communist party.<br />

25–26 March 1988 Unsuccessful attempt by the army leadership to intervene<br />

in Slovenia.<br />

31 May 1988 Arrest <strong>of</strong> four journalists in Slovenia on the order <strong>of</strong> military<br />

justice.<br />

May 1988 Kaqusha Jashari becomes party chief in Kosovo.<br />

June 1988 Veljko Kadijević replaces Branko Mamula as Defense Minister.<br />

End <strong>of</strong> July 1988 The Kosovo Serbs establish a committee for the<br />

organization <strong>of</strong> mass demonstrations throughout <strong>Yugoslavia</strong>, in support <strong>of</strong><br />

Slobodan Milošević.<br />

5 October 1988 The leadership <strong>of</strong> Vojvodina resigns after a mass<br />

demonstration in Novi Sad.<br />

19 November 1988 Milošević extracts changes in the leadership <strong>of</strong> Kosovo,<br />

by means <strong>of</strong> mass demonstrations.<br />

30 December 1988 The Mikulić government loses a vote <strong>of</strong> no confidence in<br />

the parliament and resigns. Ante Marković becomes the new Prime Minister.<br />

11 January 1989 After mass demonstrations by Milošević’s supporters in<br />

Titograd, the Montenegrin leadership resigns.<br />

24 January 1989 Demonstrations in Priština after the passage <strong>of</strong> the new,<br />

centralistic constitution <strong>of</strong> Serbia in the Serbian parliament.
