Progress <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s from the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Director</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Public</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Annual</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2011<br />

1. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> and Wellbeing Board should ensure that cancer preventi<strong>on</strong> and<br />

smoking cessati<strong>on</strong> strategies are strengthened and fresh approaches to<br />

implementati<strong>on</strong> are examined.<br />

There has been a redesign <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> smoking cessati<strong>on</strong> services which has led to 3,248<br />

smokers quitting smoking at four weeks, which is the highest number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> quitters in<br />

NHS <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> since 2005/6.<br />

2. Developing an obesity strategy should be a priority for the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> and<br />

Wellbeing Board<br />

An obesity framework has been drafted detailing the development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

comprehensive approach to addressing obesity in the City.<br />

3. It is vital that the Children and Young People’s Strategic Partnership maintain<br />

momentum and innovati<strong>on</strong> in the delivery <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the best possible services for<br />

children aged 0-5 years<br />

The Children and Young People’ Strategic Partnership has made integrated early<br />

years provisi<strong>on</strong> a priority and there is commitment from the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> and Wellbeing<br />

Board to ensure all children in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> have the best start to life.<br />

4. Local health services need to critically examine how they can collectively<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tribute and share the Local Authority’s visi<strong>on</strong> for making <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> a<br />

great working city and specifically help individuals to return to work.<br />

The NHS <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Public</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> Department commissi<strong>on</strong>ed an ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

development and health summit entitled '<str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong>, A Wealthier and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g>ier<br />

City'. Over sixty people attended the workshop from health, local authority, local<br />

businesses and academic instituti<strong>on</strong>s. A working group will c<strong>on</strong>tinue to meet to<br />

develop innovative partnerships and activity to deliver both employment and health<br />

and wellbeing outcomes for the City.<br />

5. The Local Authority should lead <strong>on</strong> undertaking systematic engagement with<br />

socially excluded communities to enable better co-ordinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> services<br />

The Local Authority has supported the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Public</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> My <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> Matters: C<strong>on</strong>necting<br />

Communities Programme which will deliver 18 community partnerships for health<br />

over three years from April 2013. This is a Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Health</str<strong>on</strong>g> recommended<br />

approach to undertaking systematic engagement with socially excluded communities<br />

which ultimately enables better coordinat<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> services through effective citizen<br />

engagement.<br />

6. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stoke</str<strong>on</strong>g>-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>Trent</strong> Clinical Commissi<strong>on</strong>ing Group should explore the role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

primary care in better managing the social and medical interface for patients<br />

Some progress has been made in delivering exemplary practice through the Quality<br />

Improvement Framework however, there remain opportunities for this improvement<br />

throughout the whole <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> primary care.<br />
