system allows him to hear and record <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> male humpback whales up to 10 miles<br />

away (16 km). For <strong>the</strong> past eight years, he has taken about 200 people a w<strong>in</strong>ter. He doesn't<br />

charge, but accepts donations for fuel and sells superb cassettes and CDs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whales<br />

s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g. This form <strong>of</strong> 'whale watch<strong>in</strong>g' expands <strong>the</strong> possiblities as it is much easier to f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

a whale us<strong>in</strong>g hydrophones and to appreciate it sonically, than it is to get close enough to<br />

see <strong>the</strong>m. Also, this way, whales can be enjoyed for hours without encroach<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>m at<br />

all — and even on days when rough seas or w<strong>in</strong>d make whale watch<strong>in</strong>g difficult. This idea<br />

has yet to be copied <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, but might well expand <strong>the</strong> possibilities <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r corners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Caribbean</strong>. With <strong>the</strong>ir detailed, chang<strong>in</strong>g songs, humpbacks <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong><br />

best opportunity for whale listen<strong>in</strong>g tours, though orcas, sperm whales and a number <strong>of</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r whale species also have <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g sounds. As word <strong>of</strong> Paul Knapp's 'listen<strong>in</strong>g tours'<br />

has spread, he has found that a few people every year travel to <strong>the</strong> BVIs specifically to go<br />

'whale listen<strong>in</strong>g'. With demand for <strong>the</strong> tours start<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> 1999, he may start<br />

charg<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> trips.<br />

Despite <strong>the</strong> smaller numbers <strong>of</strong> tourists and facilities available, <strong>the</strong> BVIs <strong>of</strong>fer a<br />

world class dest<strong>in</strong>ation with numerous boats and charters and sizeable div<strong>in</strong>g and fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

charter companies that could expand <strong>in</strong>to whale or dolph<strong>in</strong> watch<strong>in</strong>g. For humpbacks,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se might have to be full day trips to <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g grounds north <strong>of</strong> Tortola. At present,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is no perception that <strong>the</strong> market for such tours exist. Such a market might well have<br />

to be tested and even created. First <strong>of</strong> all, more work would need to be done to determ<strong>in</strong>e if<br />

<strong>the</strong> humpback whale sight<strong>in</strong>gs are regular enough <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter, or if dolph<strong>in</strong>s or o<strong>the</strong>r mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />

nature features might serve to help build <strong>the</strong> tours. One problem may be simply that <strong>the</strong><br />

open waters around <strong>the</strong> islands are a little too exposed for mass tourism; it may still be <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terest to keen whale watchers. <strong>The</strong> fact that listen<strong>in</strong>g tours were created <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BVIs,<br />

even though <strong>the</strong>se are only modestly commercial, shows that <strong>the</strong>re are possibilities.<br />

<strong>Potential</strong> ports for gett<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> humpbacks <strong>in</strong>clude Brewer's Bay, from <strong>the</strong> north<br />

side <strong>of</strong> Tortola, and from <strong>the</strong> north and west side <strong>of</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong> Gorda, as well as Little<br />

Harbour on Jost Van Dyke. <strong>The</strong> capital and bus<strong>in</strong>ess centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> territory, Road Town,<br />

located on <strong>the</strong> south side <strong>of</strong> Tortola, has <strong>the</strong> largest harbour and number <strong>of</strong> boats, although<br />

<strong>the</strong> sail<strong>in</strong>g/ motor<strong>in</strong>g time would be considerably longer s<strong>in</strong>ce most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> humpbacks are<br />

<strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> north side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> islands. However, dolph<strong>in</strong>s may be able to be seen enroute. <strong>Whale</strong><br />

watch<strong>in</strong>g might also be comb<strong>in</strong>ed with div<strong>in</strong>g or sightsee<strong>in</strong>g trips to Horseshoe Reef, a<br />

massive reef system on <strong>the</strong> south side <strong>of</strong> Angegada Island.<br />

Meantime, s<strong>in</strong>ce 1992, <strong>the</strong> BVI Conservation and Fisheries Department has asked<br />

residents and visitors to report all humpback and o<strong>the</strong>r whale sight<strong>in</strong>gs as part <strong>of</strong> a<br />

proposal to set up a mar<strong>in</strong>e conservation area north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> islands. <strong>The</strong> department has also<br />

set up a network to help stranded cetaceans and <strong>of</strong>fered a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course is rescue. <strong>The</strong><br />

National Parks Trust, based <strong>in</strong> Road Town, Tortola, has collected documentation on<br />

humpback whales. It has contributed background <strong>in</strong>formation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

valuable educational materials, to help boaters watch whales more responsibly. And <strong>the</strong>n<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is Paul Knapp, <strong>the</strong> 'whale listen<strong>in</strong>g guru', who has become a superb naturalist on his<br />

own k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> tours, and is even now, as I write this, plann<strong>in</strong>g his 16th whale listen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

season <strong>in</strong> Tortola.<br />

British Virg<strong>in</strong> Islands: <strong>Whale</strong> watch<strong>in</strong>g guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />

<strong>The</strong> National Parks Trust <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BVIs distributes a brochure which expla<strong>in</strong>s that<br />

'special rules exist for anyone see<strong>in</strong>g whales <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BVI because this is a breed<strong>in</strong>g ground<br />

and <strong>the</strong> young calves and mo<strong>the</strong>rs are particularly sensitive to disturbance. <strong>The</strong> rules are<br />

designed to protect this endangered species and to ensure that people watch whales <strong>in</strong><br />

safety.' Vessels should observe <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g restrictions (Anon. 1990, Carlson 1998):<br />

1. Boats should not approach nearer than 100 yards <strong>of</strong> a whale. This also applies to<br />

swimmers and divers who should not get <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> water with whales (be<strong>in</strong>g so close can<br />

disturb whales and may be dangerous).<br />

2. If whales approach with<strong>in</strong> 100 yeards <strong>of</strong> your vessel, put eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> neutral until whales<br />

are observed at <strong>the</strong> surface, clear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vessel. (This avoids <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury to <strong>the</strong><br />

whale or <strong>of</strong> damage to <strong>the</strong> vessel by a frightened whale.)<br />
