one adult <strong>of</strong> which has a lopped <strong>of</strong>f dorsal f<strong>in</strong>. Occasionally seen are sperm whales<br />

(October to May is best, though some year-round) or, more rarely, humpback whales<br />

(January-April). <strong>The</strong> trips have an excellent 80% sight<strong>in</strong>g success rate for dolph<strong>in</strong>s from<br />

April to September. <strong>The</strong> tours are year-round, but taper <strong>of</strong>f from November to early<br />

January when <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ds are stiffer.<br />

Recently, a second operator called Grenad<strong>in</strong>e Tours has begun <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g boat<br />

excursions with dolph<strong>in</strong> watch<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gstown, also on <strong>the</strong> leeward coast <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

V<strong>in</strong>cent. <strong>The</strong>y advertise bil<strong>in</strong>gual (French and English) tours.<br />

On Bequia, <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> yacht<strong>in</strong>g haven <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grenad<strong>in</strong>es, Heidi and Mart<strong>in</strong> Pritchard<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer sail<strong>in</strong>g tours aboard a catamaran called Passion which <strong>in</strong>cludes search<strong>in</strong>g for whales<br />

and dolph<strong>in</strong>s through <strong>the</strong> Grenad<strong>in</strong>es and along <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong> St. V<strong>in</strong>cent. <strong>The</strong> trips do not<br />

promise to deliver cetaceans but, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Heidi Pritchard, 'we <strong>of</strong>ten see <strong>the</strong>m....it is<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itely <strong>the</strong> highlight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day when whales and dolph<strong>in</strong>s are sighted on our tours.' In<br />

addition to <strong>the</strong>ir scheduled sail<strong>in</strong>g cruises, <strong>the</strong>y also accept charters specifically <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g whales and dolph<strong>in</strong>s. In <strong>the</strong> total whale-watch numbers for St. V<strong>in</strong>cent, I have<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded a modest allowance <strong>of</strong> 25% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Passion's passengers and revenues.<br />

For some years researcher Nathalie Ward has worked to encourage <strong>the</strong> educational<br />

and scientific potential <strong>of</strong> whale watch<strong>in</strong>g, produc<strong>in</strong>g posters, books and o<strong>the</strong>r useful<br />

materials and distribut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m widely through <strong>the</strong> Eastern <strong>Caribbean</strong>. She currently<br />

divides her time between Bequia <strong>of</strong>f St. V<strong>in</strong>cent, and Woods Hole, Massachusetts. In<br />

1989, she formed a volunteer network, called ECCN (Eastern <strong>Caribbean</strong> Cetacean<br />

Network), orig<strong>in</strong>ally based <strong>in</strong> Antigua, but it has recently become affiliated with <strong>the</strong><br />

Smithsonian Institute's Mar<strong>in</strong>e Mammal Laboratory (Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC), to record sight<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and strand<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e mammals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eastern <strong>Caribbean</strong>. Endorsed by <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), ECCN <strong>of</strong>fers special survey forms for<br />

fishermen, whale watch operators, yachters, and coastal residents to encourage <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

report all sight<strong>in</strong>gs and strand<strong>in</strong>gs. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Ward, ECCN's overall objective is to<br />

encourage more research and education, through better coord<strong>in</strong>ation and expansion <strong>of</strong><br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g resources, and <strong>the</strong>reby to ga<strong>in</strong> community support for <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> resident<br />

and migratory whales and dolph<strong>in</strong>s and <strong>the</strong>ir mar<strong>in</strong>e habitat. ECCN <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>in</strong>-school<br />

programmes for children and workshops for adults as well as tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions for field<br />

identification and strand<strong>in</strong>g protocols.<br />

<strong>The</strong> magical lure and romantic ambience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grenad<strong>in</strong>es are widely reported and<br />

lauded <strong>in</strong> hundreds <strong>of</strong> tourism articles and guidebooks every year. To those liv<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

travell<strong>in</strong>g aboard yachts and private boats, <strong>the</strong> Grenad<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong>fer easy sail<strong>in</strong>g and island<br />

hopp<strong>in</strong>g through clean, sparkl<strong>in</strong>g turquoise waters. <strong>The</strong> more than 30 islands and cays <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Grenad<strong>in</strong>es, partly because <strong>the</strong>y are so close to each o<strong>the</strong>r, act like stepp<strong>in</strong>g stones for<br />

yachters, and <strong>the</strong>re are numerous accessible small coves and bays to stop and dr<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ambience. It is not all for <strong>the</strong> very rich; <strong>the</strong>re is an attractive ferry service between <strong>the</strong><br />

islands, and <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> rustic accommodations as well as those on <strong>the</strong> private,<br />

luxurious resort islands. For many tourists, <strong>the</strong> sight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a whale and <strong>the</strong> frequent<br />

accompaniment <strong>of</strong> dolph<strong>in</strong>s while sail<strong>in</strong>g are part <strong>of</strong> this magical allure. O<strong>the</strong>rs meet <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

first dolph<strong>in</strong>s while div<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>ir favourite reef.<br />

For some tourists, however, <strong>the</strong> magical allure was broken <strong>in</strong> March 1999 when a<br />

calf and mo<strong>the</strong>r humpback whale pair were killed. It was <strong>the</strong> second time this had<br />

happened <strong>in</strong> two years, and it sent shockwaves through <strong>the</strong> local tourist trade. This time<br />

<strong>the</strong> kill had taken place <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> Mustique Island, and <strong>the</strong> quotes from tourists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational press were not praiseworthy toward St. V<strong>in</strong>cent or its whale hunters. Of<br />

course, any whale hunt conducted <strong>in</strong> view <strong>of</strong> most tourists would be a risky venture. But<br />

this was a calf killed to get to its mo<strong>the</strong>r; it was an endangered species; it was <strong>the</strong> favorite<br />

whale worldwide <strong>of</strong> many whale watchers for its s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g, its frequent breach<strong>in</strong>g behavior<br />

and its eagerness to approach boats full <strong>of</strong> tourists. <strong>The</strong> humpback whale is <strong>the</strong> foundation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large whale watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>of</strong> New England, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, <strong>the</strong><br />

Dom<strong>in</strong>ican Republic, Hawaii, Alaska, and Australia, among o<strong>the</strong>r places. To mar<strong>in</strong>e nature<br />

and whale watch operators and tourism <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se places, kill<strong>in</strong>g one would be like<br />

kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> goose that laid <strong>the</strong> golden egg. But to many tourists, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sort<br />

<strong>of</strong> tourists who come to <strong>the</strong> Grenad<strong>in</strong>es, kill<strong>in</strong>g a humpback whale is destroy<strong>in</strong>g a work <strong>of</strong><br />

beauty.<br />

<strong>The</strong> hunt was undertaken as part <strong>of</strong> a small quota <strong>of</strong> humpback whales allowed to a<br />

traditional whaler on Bequia. <strong>The</strong> whalers <strong>in</strong>volved were relatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bequia whaler.<br />
