Besides its yacht<strong>in</strong>g base, Antigua <strong>of</strong>fers first class div<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> its coral canyons and<br />

sea caves, with a wide range <strong>of</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e creatures. <strong>The</strong>re is no doubt that Antigua's greatest<br />

natural attractions are <strong>in</strong> its waters. <strong>The</strong> giant coral reef surround<strong>in</strong>g Antigua and Barbuda<br />

is estimated to be as large as 1,000 square miles (2600 sq km), and <strong>the</strong> expansiveness <strong>of</strong><br />

this reef means that <strong>the</strong>re are many little explored areas with sharks, barracuda and<br />

numerous reef fish species. Some sites require long boat trips but are def<strong>in</strong>itely worth<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> best and most accessible dive sites are <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> south and west coasts.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong>se may be notoriously spare <strong>of</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e life; at least one <strong>in</strong>ternational travel<br />

guide (Field<strong>in</strong>g) has compla<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> government doesn't actively enforce <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ban with<strong>in</strong> national mar<strong>in</strong>e parks, which has affected some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> more popular sites.<br />

Compared to Antigua, Barbuda is a quiet, undeveloped island with less than 2% <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> country's population. Visitors to this low-ly<strong>in</strong>g coral island tend to be bird watchers,<br />

divers or those visit<strong>in</strong>g on yachts from Antigua who want a beach to <strong>the</strong>mselves. Barbuda<br />

is also accessible by ferry or by a short flight from Antigua.<br />

Barbuda's Codr<strong>in</strong>gton Lagoon has <strong>the</strong> largest frigatebird colony <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lesser<br />

Antilles — this as well as <strong>the</strong> generally undeveloped nature <strong>of</strong> Barbuda attract <strong>the</strong> more<br />

outdoors or ecologically-m<strong>in</strong>ded tourist. <strong>The</strong> best time for bird watchers to visit is mat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

season from October to February.<br />

Along <strong>the</strong> west coast <strong>of</strong> Barbuda, from February to April, humpback whales are<br />

sometimes seen pass<strong>in</strong>g. Year round, from <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast coast, north <strong>of</strong> Spanish Po<strong>in</strong>t,<br />

Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolph<strong>in</strong>s can sometimes be seen <strong>in</strong>shore <strong>in</strong> Pelican Bay.<br />

This land po<strong>in</strong>t is <strong>the</strong> closest to deep water on <strong>the</strong> island — approximately 4 miles (6.4<br />

kms) to <strong>the</strong> 100 fathom (200 m) contour.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> sight<strong>in</strong>gs from land on both Antigua and Barbuda, land-based<br />

nature tours that <strong>in</strong>clude cetaceans may well be possible <strong>in</strong> future, although land-based<br />

whale watch<strong>in</strong>g does not usually have a substantial economic element unless <strong>the</strong> cetaceans<br />

are very close or if boat-based whale watch<strong>in</strong>g is also part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. It's worth<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d that with <strong>the</strong> large number <strong>of</strong> ocean-go<strong>in</strong>g sailboats, <strong>the</strong> effective range<br />

for whale and dolph<strong>in</strong> watch<strong>in</strong>g might well be extended fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>fshore than <strong>in</strong> many<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Caribbean</strong>. It could be worthwhile for cetacean surveys to be<br />

commissioned far<strong>the</strong>r afield around <strong>the</strong> islands throughout <strong>the</strong> year, to determ<strong>in</strong>e if <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are predictable locations and times. If <strong>the</strong>re are, Antigua and Barbuda would provide an<br />

ideal opportunity to develop several k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> whale/dolph<strong>in</strong> watch<strong>in</strong>g: Antigua, <strong>the</strong> yachtbased<br />

upper end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> market, and Barbuda, <strong>the</strong> ecotouristic side.<br />
