AQAR 2006-2007, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI has also been installed on a trial basis so as to provide wireless internet and intranet access within the premises of the Zoology Department. Area of Specialization of the Centre: The Centre is likely to specialize in an area of Genomics and the same will be finalized by members of the staff from all Life Sciences Departments. Infrastructure facilities in the Bioinformatics Centre: Establishment of fullfledged Bioinformatics Facility as per the guidelines and sanction order of the DBT is likely to be initiated during February 2007 out of the funds released during this year. The following facilities are available at present at the Centre. 18. Community services and other support services: MCC SCHOOL OF CONTINUING EDUCATION (MCCSCE) The academic year commenced on 12 July 2006 with the enrollment of candidates for the full-time Diploma and Post-graduate Diploma Courses. The enrollment was near to full capacity in most of the full-time courses. There has been remarkable response from students of the regular courses of the college for enrolment in the evening parttime courses, especially in Advertising and Public Relations; Human Resource Management, Computer Applications and several other computer-based short-term Certificate Courses. The overall enrolment has been very encouraging totaling 210 in the fourteen courses offered, as against about 150 in the previous years. The contribution of the Printing Press, as the sustainable resource generating component of the School, is satisfactory. The Eleventh Annual Convocation of the MCCSCE was held on 30 November 2006. Dr. Mithra G. Augustine, former Principal of MCC who was responsible for the starting of the Continuing Education unit in the College, as the Guest of Honour, delivered an inspiring Convocation Address. The students were privileged to attend an international seminar in Chennai on Print Journalism. The students of Printing Technology were given industrial exposure for four months in reputed companies. They also attended an international conference at Hyderabad. 21
AQAR 2006-2007, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI COLLEGE UNION SOCIETY Mr. R. Velu, Hon'ble Minister of State for Railways, Government of India, and a distinguished alumnus of the college inaugurated the activities of the College Union Society for the academic year 2006-07. The students participated in SPANDAN 2006 of JIPMER, Pondicherry. MCC stood first in English Debate and Just-A-Minute events. The students won the Light Music, Fashion Show and Dance competitions in PRASARSHINI, cultural programme conducted by Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. The College newsletter was re-christened and the first issue was released in October. 2006. The David Chandran Inter-School Athletic Meet was inaugurated by Thiru S.R. Raja, M.L.A. The inter-department basketball, football and cricket competitions were conducted successfully. DEEPWOODS 2006, the annual cultural festival of the college earned a lot of fame and recognition with more than 28 city colleges and one outstation college as participants. Quality entertainment was provided by ‘Lakshman Shruti', the light Music band, which captivated the crowd by their music. 'Morrison Avenue’ and 'Them Clones' featured on the last day of Deepwoods 2006 for the rock showdown. Teams were sent for National Level Debate prelims conducted by Loyola Society of Debaters. The team qualified for the national level by winning in the prelims. Teams were also sent for SAARANG 2006 conducted by IIT, Madras. The Danis Esau football tournament was held in the first week of February 2007 and the college team won the tournament. CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES The Centre for Women's Studies is primarily academic in thrust and the action arm of the centre is the Women's Cell. The Centre offers an optional, two-semester Value Oriented Course on Gender Studies for the first year under graduate students. It is meant to open minds on the issues and problems relating to the status of women, to discuss theories which place women biologically, functionally and culturally in a subordinate position to men and to create awareness on the need to build a society free of gender bias. 22
