AQAR 2006-2007, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI A socio-economic survey at Durganagar was conducted with the help of III B.Sc. students of the Department of Statistics on 02 December 2006. An earlier survey was conducted in March 1997. The results of the two surveys are being compared to study the progress made by the community in the past one decade and to plan new strategies for their development in future. The women workers of the College meet every first Saturday of the month. The Centre organized the annual sale for their benefit on 01 December 2006. The amount raised is being used for the medical benefit of the women workers; to give them interest free loans and to organize programmes for them. They organized special programmes to celebrate Independence Day on 15 August 2006 and Christmas programme on 17 December 2006. Programmes were also held to commemorate International Women's Day on 08 March 2007. SCRUB SOCIETY On 25 August 2006, an inter-school workshop was conducted at the Botany Gallery on ‘Our Environment'. Students and teachers from ten neighbouring schools participated in the programme. The workshop was inaugurated by the Principal; and Dr C. Livingstone, Dr S.K. Sunder Raj and Dr. D. Narasimhan were the resource persons. Deer count was conducted in August 2006. Scrub society members of the self-financed stream participated in an inter-collegiate Garbage Cleaning programme organized by the Coast Guard and Tree Foundation on 25 October 2006 at Injambakkam. They organized garbage cleaning programme on MCC campus also. Students also attended a Seminar on ‘Migratory Birds' organized by the Tree Foundation at Vedanthangal. Campus walks were conducted on several days. On 14 October 2006, the members of 'Nizhal', an NGO came for a campus walk with Scrub Society and Dr D. Narasimhan accompanied this group. Visit to Vandalur Zoo was organized on four Sundays. Visit to Vedanthangal Water Birds Sanctuary was organised on two days. Scrub Society put up a stall during Deepwoods to create awareness on nature and natural resources. Paper bags were made and distributed to the public to avoid using plastic bags. STUDENT SERVICE FOR THE BLIND The Student Service for the Blind continues to serve as a support system for the visually challenged students. In this academic year, nine visually challenged students made use of the reading and scribing facilities through the dedicated service of 23
AQAR 2006-2007, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI student volunteers. Student volunteers of the evening stream were volunteering in the scribing of the tests during the morning sessions and vice versa. The ‘Tactile Sudoku Puzzle' developed by Dr. T. Robinson (which received the national award from the President of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during 2005) had been experimented with visually challenged students. STUDENT CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT The Student Christian Movement (SCM) has been judiciously balancing social action with the spiritual concern of the students by carrying out programmes with a purpose of keeping the Christian mission of our college alive. The following are the highlights on some of the activities of the SCM during the year 2006-2007: • Preparatory session led by an old SCMer Mr. Anand Jeykumar, Director, Metro Missions; Inaugur al session with an old SCMer Dr. Irene Raj Foster, Professor of Management, Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management, Tennessee, USA as the Chief Guest. • To celebrate the 300th anniversary of Zeigenbalg's arrival in India, many events were held starting with an interactive session with Dr. Daniel Jeyaraj, Professor of World Christianity, Andover Newton Theological School, Massachusetts, USA and author of best-selling books on the life and mission of Ziegenbalg. He spoke on the topic, ‘Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg (the first protestant missionary to India): An Indian Analysis’; Screening of the inspiring movie on Ziegenbalg; Exhibition and a Sound & Light Programme on the amazing life story of Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, the Father of Modem Protestant Mission conceptualized by Mr. Navaneethar of FMPB were the other highlights. A challenging session on the lives of the founders of our college and other missionaries was a part of it. Some of the SCMers visited Tranquebar, the place where Ziegenbalg started his missionary work in India and had a fruitful session with Rev. Christian Samraj, Director of the Spiritual Centre at Tranquebar. • Fresher’s Retreat with the Navodaya Team; ‘Illusion and Beyond', a unique program led by Mr. Adrian van Vactor, a US Illusionist who has won some international awards; Time of Choreography, Skit, Music and Message by the YWAM Team from Korea. 24
