34. Incentives to outstanding sportspersons:<br />

Free board and lodging is provided for outstanding sports persons in the halls of<br />

residence for men. To encourage the sports persons, a special food is provided.<br />

Scholarships are awarded for outstanding sports persons.<br />

35. Student achievements and awards:<br />

Department of History: The III year History Vocational Students, in their excavation<br />

project, made an archaeological discovery of great significance at Thiruvakkarai<br />

village, near Tindivanam. They found fossil wood tools at a depth of about three<br />

meters and the tools included hand-axes, cleavers, long blades and microlithics of<br />

various types such as end scraper, side-end-scraper, saws, trimmed blades, etc. this<br />

discovery of fossil wood tools has pushed back the dates of the earliest human<br />

habitation in India to 0.3 million years fixing it on par with discoveries in Africa and<br />

proved that evolution was uniform. This discovery was reported as a news item in<br />

several English and Tamil dailies. The inauguration of the ‘Manuscripts Day’<br />

celebrations organized by the Government Museum, Chennai, was presided over by<br />

Prof. K. Dawn Stanly, Head of the Department of History. Students of History<br />

Department and two faculty members participated in the programme and S. Deepika<br />

won the first prize in the essay writing competition.<br />

Department of Political Science: Anli Abraham and Madu Esther, III B.A., and<br />

Likhina of I M.A. presented review papers on ‘Racism in United States’, Interactive<br />
