medium education; along with the school the MCC FLI also has a maternity center<br />
and dispensary and tailoring unit and self help groups for women.<br />
ESTUARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY PULICAT<br />
The lab was founded by Dr. P. J. Sanjeeva Raj, former Head of the Department of<br />
Zoology. The lab has 8.9 acres of land including the water front. It is unique because<br />
it provides a lab setting for various departments like Zoology, Marine studies, Social<br />
Work, Statistics, etc. Academic and outreach programmes are conducted by various<br />
departments of the college.<br />
MCC FARM<br />
The Piggery, Dairy, Goat and Poultry sheds have been renovated. A new bullock cart<br />
was purchased for the Farm. Orders have been placed for the purchase of 25 piglets,<br />
100 young turkeys, 500 broiler chicks and 500 young Japanese quails. Paddy was<br />
cultivated in 2 acres and harvested in October <strong>2006</strong> and February <strong>2007</strong>. Gingili plant<br />
was cultivated in one acre and was harvested. Oil was extracted and sold. Biodiesel<br />
plant, Jatropha, is under cultivation in one acre. Greens, radish and lady's finger are<br />
also under cultivation. Agricultural officers of the SPIC Training Centre in <strong>Madras</strong><br />
<strong>Christian</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus under the leadership of Mr Thiagarajan, Principal of the<br />
Training Centre, provided technical advice and other support in all activities of the<br />
Farm. Commercial cultivation of medicinal plant, Catharanthus roseus (Vinca rosea)<br />
and Casuarina tree in about three acres each is being planned. Cultivation of fodder<br />
grass is also being planned. The Zoology Department of MCC is conducting practical<br />
training on ‘Vermicomposting' in the Farm. Students who have joined the UGC<br />
sponsored Certificate Course on Vermicomposting are benefited by this programme.<br />
