AQAR 2006-2007, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI CAMPUS MINISTRIES The academic year began with the Staff Retreat on 11 June 2006. Rev. Dr Jesudoss, former Principal of Gurukul Theological Seminary was the leader of the retreat this year. The Staff-Student Retreat was held on 27 August 2006. It was well attended by staff and students. This year the Staff Study Circle organized meetings for the Self Financed Faculty at 11.30 a.m. on every first Thursday of the month. Several speakers were invited for the Staff Study Circle. A committee was constituted by the Principal to revive the activities of IACS. The following members were nominated by the Principal: Rev. Dr V.M. Spurgeon (Convener), Dr Moses Michael Faraday, Dr K. Joshua, Dr Moses Inbaraj and Dr Thomas Rosy. The Committee met thrice and decided to have the following activities: (i) conduct a PG Diploma in Christian Studies for the PG students from the academic year 2007-08. Dr Thomas Rosy will coordinate this; (ii) conduct a Christian Leadership Training for Church Leaders. Dr Moses Inbaraj will be the Coordinator; and (iii) organize a Seminar on the contributions of Zeigenbalg with the Department of Tamil. Dr Moses Michael Faraday will coordinate this Seminar. Dr M. Gladstone, former Principal of our College, instituted a scholarship in memory of his son Vijay Manuel for four active student members of the Chapel. This scholarship was given to the following students: Visy Sara, Sandhya Alexander, Thresa Catherine Miny and Jebin. Different carol services were held and the choir participated in the Alumni Concert under the leadership of Mr Vimal Kurien. Sunday Evening Service in the Anderson Hall were held regularly. OXFAM SCHOOL With the support of Caruna Bal Vikas, an NGO, the school has improved considerably not only in terms of pupil strength but also the quality of education offered. The school, as always, celebrated the Independence Day, Children’s Day and Christmas function. MCC – FAMILY LIFE INSTITUTE (FLI) FLI School was started as a part of the community outreach program in the neighborhood village of MCC. The school caters to the marginalized and the oppressed community people in the village. The school provides quality english 29
AQAR 2006-2007, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI medium education; along with the school the MCC FLI also has a maternity center and dispensary and tailoring unit and self help groups for women. ESTUARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY PULICAT The lab was founded by Dr. P. J. Sanjeeva Raj, former Head of the Department of Zoology. The lab has 8.9 acres of land including the water front. It is unique because it provides a lab setting for various departments like Zoology, Marine studies, Social Work, Statistics, etc. Academic and outreach programmes are conducted by various departments of the college. MCC FARM The Piggery, Dairy, Goat and Poultry sheds have been renovated. A new bullock cart was purchased for the Farm. Orders have been placed for the purchase of 25 piglets, 100 young turkeys, 500 broiler chicks and 500 young Japanese quails. Paddy was cultivated in 2 acres and harvested in October 2006 and February 2007. Gingili plant was cultivated in one acre and was harvested. Oil was extracted and sold. Biodiesel plant, Jatropha, is under cultivation in one acre. Greens, radish and lady's finger are also under cultivation. Agricultural officers of the SPIC Training Centre in Madras Christian College campus under the leadership of Mr Thiagarajan, Principal of the Training Centre, provided technical advice and other support in all activities of the Farm. Commercial cultivation of medicinal plant, Catharanthus roseus (Vinca rosea) and Casuarina tree in about three acres each is being planned. Cultivation of fodder grass is also being planned. The Zoology Department of MCC is conducting practical training on ‘Vermicomposting' in the Farm. Students who have joined the UGC sponsored Certificate Course on Vermicomposting are benefited by this programme. 19.
