NEED TO KNOW
MEAL PLAN h Breakfast, lunch/picnic lunch (except Days
7 and 10) and dinner throughout.
ACCOMMODATION h Simple 2 and 3 Star properties are
used, consistent with the local environment. These are
largely the best available to us but standards are low by
international standards. Rooms are clean and adequate
with private facilities and hot water. Some have fans or
air-conditioning; others – particularly in the highlands –
do not have either. In Madagascar the electricity supply
is intermittent. Most hotels have generators. On
occasion it may be necessary to use alternative hotels of
a similar standard to those detailed.
TRAVEL h Madagascar’s infrastructure is still developing
and as a result there may be occasional disruptions to
the itinerary. Due to distances and road conditions,
some days include extended travel (approximate travel
times are in the itinerary, dependent on local
conditions). Road journeys can be long and bumpy, but
are scenic and rewarding. On domestic flights free
seating applies.
TRAVEL TIPS h Bring comfortable walking shoes and a
lightweight waterproof, plus sun cream, sun hat, camera
and a sense of adventure!
GROUP SIZE h Maximum 12 passengers.

GRATUITIES h Small amounts are recommended for
services such as porterage. We recommend tipping your

English speaking driver/guide throughout and a local
expert guide during wildlife treks. This tour is exclusively
for Kuoni clients.

DAY 6 h Spend a full day in Ranomafana National Park, a
beautiful mountainous rainforest reserve. Explore the main
forest to spot local birds, lemurs including three species of
bamboo lemur, the common brown lemur and red bellied
lemur, and the world’s largest chameleon: the Parson’s
chameleon, only found in Madagascar. In the afternoon
journey to Vohipara forest and search for endemic bird life
such as the Madagascar forest fody and the cryptic warbler.
DAY 7 h Drive up into the scenic highlands en route
to Ambositra, where many Malagasy handicrafts are
produced. Visit local craft shops and watch the craftsmen
at work. Travel on to Antsirabe for dinner and one night at
the Royal Palace (or similar), (approx. 190 miles, 7 hours).
DAY 8 h This morning, visit the small spa town of Antsirabe,
known for its gemstones and hot springs and littered with
tiny craftsmen’s workshops. Continue through the eastern
rainforests to the Peyreras reserve to visit a private reptile
park where crocodiles, geckos and butterflies can be seen.
Arrive at the Andasibe Hotel (or similar) early evening for
dinner and a two night stay (approx. 4 hours).
DAY 9 h Journey to Mantadia National Park for a forest walk
along the winding trails, where you may be lucky enough
to spot diademed sifaka and black and white ruff lemurs.
Spend the afternoon in Vakona private reserve, where
there is a small island sanctuary for lemurs.
Later, enjoy a thrilling evening walk to spot nocturnal
species such as the tiny mouse lemur with its huge amber
eyes, hairy-eared lemur and eastern woolly lemur, as well
as various reptiles and amphibians.
DAY 10 h Embark on a morning walk in the Analamazaotra
reserve for an exciting chance to see the largest living
lemur: the endangered Indri-Indri, known for its loud
territorial song-like calls that can last for more than three
minutes. Stand still and listen as the different families
call to each other through the treetops. Travel back to
Antananarivo and the Royal Palissandre Hotel (or similar)
for an evening at leisure before dinner at a local restaurant
(approx. 4 hours).
DAY 11 h Transfer to the airport for your return flight,
or choose to extend your stay on one of Madagascar’s
gloriously undeveloped beaches.

DAY 11 h Fly from Antananarivo to Nosy Be and transfer by
road to Vanila Hotel & Spa (p105) for a three night stay in a
Garden Room.
DAY 12-13 h We strongly recommend you book an optional
day excursion (at extra cost) to Nosy Komba and Nosy
Tanikely. Nosy Komba is a small mountainous island situated
between Nosy Be and mainland Africa, known for its lemur
population. Nosy Tanikely is its even smaller neighbour and
a national park and marine reserve, with excellent diving
opportunities amongst the colourful fish and coral reefs.
Enjoy a barbecue lunch before returning to Nosy Be.
DAY 14 h Fly from Nosy Be back to Antananarivo for one
night at the Royal Palissandre Hotel.
DAY 15 h Depart for your onward journey.
