Explore South Africa on a self-drive
holiday tailored especially for
families, giving you the flexibility
to go where you want, when you
want. Enjoy getting to know creatures of the deep in
Cape Town’s aquarium, take the cable car up to Table
Mountain and meet a plethora of furry friends at
Monkeyland before taking a walk on the wild side at
Kariega Game Reserve and spotting rhino, elephants,
lions and leopards on thrilling game drives.

DURATION: 8 nights

DAY 1 h On arrival, you will be
met and escorted to the vehicle
rental desk where you will collect
your vehicle before continuing on
to your hotel, the Southern Sun
Waterfront. The rest of the day is
at leisure and you could choose to
drive to the V&A Waterfront and
visit the Two Oceans Aquarium,
where you can gain a deeper
understanding of the two oceans
that make up South Africa’s
coastline, the Indian and the
Atlantic. There are many exhibits
including sharks, clown fish,
manta rays, penguins and frogs,
and a dedicated kids section with
touch exhibit and play area. You
could also explore other areas of
Cape Town such as Signal Hill, the
Castle of Good Hope or take the
cable car up Table Mountain.
DAY 2 h The next two days are at
leisure for you to explore. Perhaps
take the Peninsula tour and drive
via the scenic Chapman’s Peak
Pass (if road is open) towards
Cape Point, stopping off at Cape
Point Ostrich Farm where you can
ride an ostrich. In Simonstown
stop off at Boulders Beach for a
real treat, a colony of penguins
in their natural habitat with a
visitors centre full of information.
Or you could take a tour of the
winelands and drive north towards
Franschhoek. En route you can
visit Butterfly World before
enjoying lunch in Stellenbosch
and the Spier Wine Estate. Here
you can leave the kids with a
guided tour of the birds of prey
rehabilitation centre whilst
you enjoy a wine tasting and
introduction to the winemaking
process. The Eight to Go
restaurant offers picnics and
lunches using organic and local
produce wherever possible.
DAY 4 h After breakfast enjoy the
scenic roads of the garden route as
you travel towards Knysna. En route
perhaps stop off at Mossel Bay and
visit the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse
and the renowned Post Office Tree,
a massive milkwood tree which
passing sailors used to leave letters
in for collection and delivery. There
is also the Maritime Museum where
you can find a life-size replica of
Dias’s sailing ship. After lunch at
one of the restaurants of Mossel
Bay, continue to Knysna and the
Protea Hotel Knysna Quays, your
hotel for the next two nights.
DAY 5 h Explore Knysna, famed
for its lagoon and fresh oysters
and perhaps visit Monkeyland,
the world’s first free-roaming
multi-species primate sanctuary.
Here you will find ring-tailed
lemurs, howler monkeys, squirrel
monkeys and many others during
your walking safari through the
sanctuary. Consider enjoying
lunch at the Bramon Wines and
enjoy local wine, cheese, oysters,
meat and pates with homemade
bread and finished off with a
simply delectable dessert.
DAY 6 h This morning continue
along the Garden Route to
Kariega Game Reserve where
you should arrive in time for
the 3:30pm game drive. En route
to Kariega you could stop off at
the Strormsriver National Park
or Stormsriver Village and take a
wander through the forest with a
chance to spot the elusive Narina
Trogan or Knysna Loerie who enjoy
spending time in the leafy canopy.
DAY 7 h Enjoy the next two days
at Kariega Game Reserve (p152)
and experience morning and
afternoon game drives. Kariega is
perfectly suited to families as it is
malaria free, home to the Big Five
and has a wonderfully relaxed
atmosphere as well as a great
range of activities including nature
walks, canoeing and swimming.
DAY 9 h After breakfast drive out
towards Port Elizabeth where you
will drop off your hire vehicle and
continue on your journey.

via Johannesburg to Livingstone
and transfer to your hotel. Rest
of the day is at leisure or consider

DAY 10 h Spend today at leisure,
enjoying the varied facilities of the
Zambezi Sun. Kids aged 3-12 will
enjoy Kamp Kwena, which offers
fun activities, excursions and
nature walks, or you could choose
to enjoy a guided tour of the
falls instead.
DAY 11 h Transfer to the airport for
your onward journey.
