THE MISSION
In 2010 the conservation status for the African penguin
was changed from Vulnerable to Endangered and with two
recent oil spills having affected a large proportion of the
African penguin population the research into their survival
rates, foraging ecology and overall breeding productivity
is essential for future conservation. More than 10% of
African penguins have been caught in these oil spills. They
had to be cleaned and released and the ongoing monitoring
of the breeding success of the birds affected along with
their offspring is required.
The main concern for Earthwatch is to help understand the
causes for the African Penguins’ rapid population decline
and to use any information gathered to help develop
appropriate conservation methods.
A TYPICAL DAY
Below is a taste of what a typical day as a volunteer on the
South African Penguins expedition may be like. Be aware
that each day is different, and activities will change due to
weather, work conditions and project demands. Volunteers
will have one or two recreational days, and during these
have the option of taking one or two half day tours at
their own expense. A tour of Robben Island prison is also
arranged during your stay.
7:00 a.m. Breakfast
8:30 a.m. Meet with team leader and begin morning
fieldwork which could include monitoring nests, chick
development, diet, re-sighting banded birds, monitoring
duration and location of foraging, GPS data collection and
cleaning sections of the coastline.
12:30 pm - Lunch
3:00 pm - Afternoon fieldwork could include any of the
activities listed above in the morning session
6:00 pm - Dinner
8:00 pm - Assist with data entry and recap of day’s
observations and briefing for following day’s work
9:00 pm - Occasional evening fieldwork

ACCOMMODATION h South African Penguins - The house
contains 6 single beds and depending on the number of
people working on the island volunteers may be asked to
share rooms. Living Alongside Leopards and Monkeys in
South Africa - Team members of the same gender will
share each room. Couples accommodations and single
room requests may be available dependent on the
number of volunteers in the group.
MEAL PLAN h South African Penguins – The house on
Robben Island is equipped with basic cooking facilities:
a stove, microwave, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans,
refrigerator and deep freezer. Food will be bought by the
team leader ahead of the start date. All members of the
team are expected to assist with the preparation of
meals as well as the clean-up afterward. Living
Alongside Leopards and Monkeys in South Africa- The
Wilderness Camp has its own kitchen facilities and
eating area. There will be a resident cook for the
volunteer teams who will take primary responsibility for
overseeing the catering arrangements. But, depending
on the size of the team, some assistance may be
required from volunteers in either preparing the food or
in clearing up after the meals.
YOUR CONTRIBUTION h Your monetary contribution
helps fund ongoing research projects and education
work, basic scientific equipment and your stay.
MAXIMUM GROUP SIZE h Projects accommodate up to 4
volunteers at one time.
NB h The project does include insurance, but it is
essential that you also carry sufficient travel insurance.
You must be prepared to accept the safety regulations

not usually visit. These locations are often remote and the
conditions for the people who live there are generally basic.
