FAS 260 Architecture: Introduction and History<br />

(3 credits)<br />

The aim of this course is to stimulate the appreciation of<br />

architecture in students who have had little or no exposure<br />

to the subject. The course is organized by historical periods,<br />

from ancient Egypt through the end of the 20th century. It<br />

considers architectural aims, materials, methods, structural<br />

principles, major works and styles. It makes connections<br />

between individual buildings and the cultural contexts from<br />

which they were derived. Field trips are required.<br />

FAS 305 Digital Documentary Photography (3 credits)<br />

This course provides an opportunity for students to explore<br />

the art of storytelling through visual means. Utilizing either<br />

digital photography or film, student will be expected to produce<br />

a body of work that focuses on a particular subject<br />

(individual, place, organization) or larger issue. This class<br />

will not be assignment driven, instead, each student will<br />

work on one long-term project. To prepare for that, students<br />

will begin the term by focusing on a small story that can be<br />

captured in about two weeks. Each week students will be<br />

expected to bring in photographs that will be the building<br />

blocks to the story they have chosen to tell. This course is<br />

cross-listed as COM 305. Prerequisite: FAS 226.<br />

FAS 310 Illustration (3 credits)<br />

This course builds upon skills and concepts learned in FAS<br />

110 (Introductory Drawing) with the focus shifting to the<br />

applications of drawing in projects related to the discipline of<br />

graphic design. Drawing skills will be applied to such practical<br />

applications as storyboarding, text illustration and display,<br />

packaging design, Web design, video animation and<br />

multimedia. Class meets 60 hours per term. Prerequisite:<br />

FAS 110.<br />

FAS 320 History of Design (3 credits)<br />

This course introduces the major movements in the history<br />

of design since the Industrial Revolution, including the Arts<br />

& Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, the Bauhaus,<br />

constructivism, and contemporary trends in popular design.<br />

Students will be encouraged to apply their learning to practical<br />

design exercises. Prerequisite: FAS 201 or FAS 202.<br />

FAS 323 Music Theory and Composition (3 credits)<br />

This course introduces students to the scope of western<br />

music theory and harmony. It provides vocabulary, concepts,<br />

and musical examples that allow students to comprehend<br />

the fundamentals of music theory and composition.<br />

Topics include music fundamentals, diatonic triads, diatonic<br />

seventh chords, chromaticism, and twentieth-century practices.<br />

The course places an emphasis on learning about<br />

music through original composition. This course requires<br />

interaction with <strong>SNHU</strong> ensemble.<br />

FAS 326 History of Photography (3 credits)<br />

In this course, students will examine the history of photography<br />

from its invention in 1839 to the present time. The<br />

course will endeavor to address the technical, artistic, and<br />

social underpinnings of this most modern of art forms.<br />

FAS 340 Modern Art (3 credits)<br />

This course presents an introduction to the major artists,<br />

works and stylistic periods of modern art and relates them to<br />

historical and cultural contexts of the 20th century. It aims to<br />

stimulate the appreciation of art in students who have had<br />

little or no exposure to the subject.<br />

FAS 370 American Art (3 credits)<br />

This is a course about art appreciation and art history that<br />

will introduce students to essential concepts of aesthetics,<br />

media and the cultural meanings of art. Students will learn<br />

about the development of American art from Puritan times<br />

to World War II. Special attention will be paid to the cultural<br />

relevance of art, including what American art can teach<br />

us about America and what is uniquely American about<br />

American art.<br />

FAS 380 Art and Gender (3 credits)<br />

This course explores the nature of gendered representation<br />

in the history of art from the Renaissance to the present.<br />

While the primary focus will be on the representation of<br />

women and the work of women artists, the construction of<br />

masculinity in the arts will also be addressed. Art will be<br />

examined in relation to its political, social, economic, and<br />

religious context to establish the broader implications of<br />

these visual documents. The student will gain a broadly<br />

inclusive understanding of the Western artist tradition as<br />

well as sensitivity to gender issues and the gendered nature<br />

of representation. Prerequisites: FAS 201 and FAS 202.<br />

FAS 390 Non-Western Art (3 credits)<br />

This course is an introduction to aspects of non-European art<br />

created by cultures selected from at least two of the following<br />

geographic areas: Africa, the Americas (indigenous cultures),<br />

Oceania, Southwest Asia (the Middle East), South<br />

Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Although the specific<br />

artistic content, geographical coverage and/or thematic<br />

structure of the course may vary from semester to semester,<br />

after its completion students should be able to identify and<br />

analyze selected works of non-Western art with regard to<br />

aesthetics, media, means and content, using appropriate<br />

vocabulary and demonstrating links to such cultural contexts<br />

as history, social structure, philosophy and religion.<br />

Global Marker. Prerequisite: FAS 201 or FAS 202 or FAS 340<br />

or FAS 370.<br />

FAS 480 Independent Study (3 credits)<br />

This course allows the student to investigate any fine arts<br />

subject not incorporated into the curriculum. Prerequisites:<br />

Permission of the instructor, program coordinator/department<br />

chair, and school dean.<br />
