SPT 208 Sport Marketing (3 credits)<br />
Students study current sports marketing issues and apply<br />
marketing techniques to develop an effective sports marketing<br />
plan. Prerequisite: MKT 113.<br />
SPT 307 Sport Law (3 credits)<br />
This course presents the legal issues that are specific to the<br />
management of sport programs at the professional, college<br />
and community levels. Prerequisites: BUS 206.<br />
SPT 310 Sport Sponsorship (3 credits)<br />
This experiential learning course provides students with the<br />
opportunity to actively participate in their personal and professional<br />
development. Through actively participating in the<br />
learning process, students will enhance their experience and<br />
understanding of the corporate sponsorship sales process<br />
specifically in the areas of proposal development, research<br />
and analysis, solicitation/sales, contracts, evaluation and servicing/managing.<br />
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.<br />
SPT 319 Sport Sales and Promotions (3 credits)<br />
This course provides a cross-disciplinary approach to a variety<br />
of marketing, sales and public relations issues that confront<br />
sport managers. Prerequisites: ENG 121 and SPT 208.<br />
SPT 320 Media & Public Relations in Sport (3 credits)<br />
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding<br />
of the role of media and public relations in the sport<br />
industry. The primary aim is to familiarize students with<br />
media relations, public relations, and community relations in<br />
sport organization and how these areas are integrated into<br />
the field of sport and the engagement of interdisciplinary<br />
thinking. Prerequisite: ENG 121; or the permission of the<br />
instructor.<br />
SPT 321 Fitness Management (3 credits)<br />
This course will provide specific information about personal<br />
fitness. Topics include the purchase and use of fitness equipment<br />
and staffing and management concerns for club, corporate<br />
and collegiate settings. Prerequisite: Sophomore<br />
standing or permission of the instructor. A $25 lab fee is<br />
required to cover CPR certification.<br />
SPT 323 Golf Management (3 credits)<br />
Golf Management will prepare students for a career in one of<br />
the most rapidly growing industries in the United States. Golf<br />
and business are intertwined. Golf is a business comprised<br />
of equipment, apparel, golf courses, travel, real estate development<br />
and many other aspects. The combination of classroom<br />
instruction, outside speakers and on-site visits will<br />
prepare a student to enter this growing field. Prerequisite:<br />
Junior standing or permission of the instructor.<br />
SPT 333 Sport, Society, and Ethics (3 credits)<br />
This course examines the major issues and controversies of<br />
sport in society. Students will develop an appreciation of<br />
the ways sport in society contributes to analyzing and understanding<br />
human behavior in sports contexts. Students will<br />
be encouraged to ask questions and think critically about<br />
sports as part of social life. This course is cross-listed with<br />
SOC 333. Prerequisite: COM 212 and Junior standing or permission<br />
of instructor.<br />
SPT 340 Practicum in Sport Management (3 credits)<br />
This seminar combined with field experience (120 hours)<br />
will provide an opportunity to apply theories, concepts, and<br />
terminology into a practical experience in the field of sport<br />
management. Specifically, this experience will provide the<br />
student with a mentor and colleagues to learn about management,<br />
leadership, decision making, communication, customer<br />
service, and to develop as a future professional in the<br />
field. Prerequisites: SPT 111 and permission of instructor.<br />
SPT 364 Private Club Management (3 credits)<br />
This course is an exploration of the world of private clubs,<br />
club leadership and the administration of private club operations.<br />
Topics covered include club organization, service<br />
excellence and quality management, strategic management,<br />
marketing clubs, human resource management, financial<br />
management, food and beverage operations, golf operations<br />
and recreational operations. This course is cross-listed with<br />
HTM 364. Prerequisite: Junior standing.<br />
SPT 375 The Economics of Professional Sports in the<br />
United States (3 credits)<br />
This course employs the models and theories developed in<br />
microeconomics to study the sports industry in the United<br />
States. The course applies three areas of economic theory to<br />
the study of professional sports (baseball, basketball, football<br />
and hockey) as well as intercollegiate sports. The three<br />
areas of economic theory utilized are industrial organization,<br />
public finance, and labor economics. This course is crosslisted<br />
with ECO 375. Prerequisite: ECO 201.<br />
SPT 401 Sport Facilities Management (3 credits)<br />
The elements of managing sport facilities, including arenas,<br />
stadiums and athletic complexes, form the content of this<br />
course. Prerequisite: SPT 111 and Junior standing or permission<br />
of the instructor.<br />
SPT 402 Sport Revenue (3 credits)<br />
This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding<br />
of the many traditional and innovative revenue acquisition<br />
methods available to sport organizations. Students will<br />
be exposed to conventional income sources, including tax support,<br />
ticket sales, concessions and fund raising, and will examine<br />
more recent innovations related to licensing sport products,<br />
media sales and corporate sponsorship. Prerequisite: ECO 201,<br />
ECO 202, FIN 320, or permission of the instructor.<br />
SPT 415 Event Management & Marketing (6 credits)<br />
This experiential learning course provides students with the<br />
opportunity to actively participate in their personal and professional<br />
development. Only through actively participating in<br />
the learning process will students enhance their personal<br />
experience and their understanding of the sport event management<br />
process and the leadership and management skills<br />
involved. In the process, students will increase their knowledge<br />
of various aspects of sport event management (budgeting,<br />
operations, marketing, media relations, public relations,<br />
sponsorship, registration, hospitality, volunteer management)<br />
and apply that knowledge in the planning and execution of a<br />
participatory sporting event. Students earn 6 credits upon<br />
completing this course. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.<br />
