The Graduate Program and has also been broadened to include occupational therapy, and the first occupational therapist was appointed to the program for a two year period in January 2005. INSERVICE AND CONTINUING EDUCATION Forensicare has a formal Professional Education Program that provides all staff with inservice and continuing education opportunities throughout the year. The program provides education sessions at Thomas Embling Hospital, the Community Program and Melbourne Assessment Prison. Topics presented cover both forensic-specific and general mental health issues, and includes internal and external presenters. Specific training outcomes achieved during the year include – • Consolidating and Strengthening Clinical Programs (CSCP) – the training provided to staff as part of the CSCP project, is detailed on page 22. In summary however, a total of 3,776.5 training hours on offending issues and dual diagnosis was provided to staff as part of the CSCP project. • Inservice education sessions were provided on working with families, mental state examination, grief and loss, the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997, patients rights, management of acute arousal, critical incident response and discharge planning. • A total of 7,770 clinical staff training hours was provided, and 97.2% of clinical staff completed training (in 2003-2004, 7,150 training hours were provided to 96.7% of staff). Both this year and 2003-2004 saw additional specialised training provided – this year CSCP training (see above), and in 2003-2004 extensive organisation wide training in outcome measurement was provided at the request of the Department of Human Services. ORIENTATION Forensicare has a comprehensive day and a half Orientation Program that provides all staff (including agency, bank and contracted staff) with the information necessary to work within our specialised environment. During 2004-2005, nine Orientation Programs were provided for new staff, which were followed by a comprehensive orientation to the unit in which the staff member was allocated. TRAINING AND SUPPORT PROVIDED TO EXTERNAL AGENCIES Forensicare has an active education and training program that focuses on enhancing knowledge and skills of forensic mental health issues. During the past year we provided 30 sessions to external agencies, in addition to the 24 provided to area mental health services (in 2003-2004, 28 sessions were provided) and staff delivered 109 formal presentations and papers to professional forums (94 papers were presented in 2003-2004). A new initiative saw the Senior and Deputy Senior Social Worker in Thomas Embling Hospital provide supervision for three forensic social workers from Tasmania, via videolink. COLLABORATIVE ‘CLUSTER’ TRAINING During the year, the Department of Human Services established three statewide ‘cluster’ groups, incorporating mental health providers and services in specific regions (bringing together community, adult, and aged agencies) to provide a range of learning initiatives for staff utilising shared expertise. Forensicare, together with Austin Health, Eastern Health, Goulburn Valley Health, North East Hume and St Vincent’s, joined to form the North East Cluster, known as NEVIL: North East Victoria Into Learning. A range of training courses and professional development activities have been offered, and during the coming year Forensicare is scheduled to provide workshops on risk management and aggression for staff of agencies in our cluster. EDUCATIONAL AFFILIATIONS Forensicare has formally established affiliations with Monash University and The University of Melbourne. Additional affiliations have been also been developed through student placements with Latrobe University, Deakin University, RMIT University, Victoria University of Technology and Australian Catholic University.
