Introduction<br />
<strong>The</strong> following four chapters present an outline <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> textual tradition<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cantong qi from <strong>the</strong> Tang to <strong>the</strong> Qing dynasties (ca. seventh to<br />
nineteenth centuries). <strong>The</strong> outline generally follows a historical<br />
sequence and focuses on commentaries and on some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />
representative essays and related texts.<br />
Bibliographic details on <strong>the</strong> works included in this outline are<br />
found in Part I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present book. Several sections are concluded by<br />
a list <strong>of</strong> references to studies in Chinese, Japanese, and English. <strong>The</strong>se<br />
references supplement those to premodern and modern bibliographic<br />
works given in Part I.<br />
Unless o<strong>the</strong>rwise noted, references to <strong>the</strong> Cantong qi are to section<br />
and verse numbers in <strong>the</strong> text reproduced below in Appendix 3, and<br />
translated in my <strong>The</strong> <strong>Seal</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Unity</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Three</strong>, vol. 1.<br />
