duplicate variants already pointed out by Zhu Xi: this remark would<br />

hardly be meaningful if <strong>the</strong> critical apparatus in <strong>the</strong> Kaoyi had been as<br />

exiguous as it is in <strong>the</strong> received version. 19 Fur<strong>the</strong>r, and most significantly,<br />

in his own textual notes on <strong>the</strong> Cantong qi, Yu Yan refers twice<br />

to Zhu Xi’s critical comments that are not found in <strong>the</strong> received text<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kaoyi:<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> first comment concerns verse 15:12: “<strong>The</strong>y would part away<br />

from each o<strong>the</strong>r” ( 誃 離 俯 仰 ). For yangfu 仰 俯 , o<strong>the</strong>r redactions<br />

or editions read fuyang 俯 仰 . Yu Yan writes: “Zhu Xi says: <strong>The</strong><br />

correct reading is yangfu 仰 俯 ” (「 朱 子 謂 、 當 作 仰 俯 」). This<br />

sentence is not found in Zhu Xi’s received text.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> second comment concerns verses 64:9–10: “Thus <strong>the</strong>y bite<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y gulp, <strong>the</strong>y chew and <strong>the</strong>y swallow each o<strong>the</strong>r” ( 遂 相 銜<br />

咽 、 咀 嚼 相 吞 ). <strong>The</strong>se verses are found after verse 62:16 in Yu<br />

Yan’s redaction, which follows Zhu Xi’s text. Yu Yan reports a<br />

note that was found in Zhu Xi’s commentary:<br />

Zhu Xi says: <strong>The</strong>se two verses (i.e., 64:9–10) should come after <strong>the</strong><br />

verses “<strong>The</strong> two feed on one ano<strong>the</strong>r and crave one for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r” ( 兩<br />

相 飲 食 、 俱 相 貪 併 , 64:7–8), [because] <strong>the</strong> four verses (i.e., 64:7–10)<br />

are tied to one ano<strong>the</strong>r and are connected by <strong>the</strong>ir meaning. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

should not be found here (i.e., after 62:16). (「 朱 子 謂 、 今 按 二 句 、<br />

自 屬 下 文 『 俱 相 貪 併 』 之 下 、 四 句 相 承 、 語 意 連 屬 、 不 當 在 此 」).<br />

Contradicting this remark, verses 64:9–10 are found after 64:7–8 in<br />

Zhu Xi’s received text, and not after 62:16. It seems evident that<br />

Huang Ruijie (or perhaps ano<strong>the</strong>r earlier editor <strong>of</strong> Zhu Xi’s work)<br />

moved <strong>the</strong> two verses from section 62 to section 64 in agreement<br />

with Zhu Xi’s remark, and eliminated <strong>the</strong> remark.<br />

Zhu Xi does not state which redaction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cantong qi provided<br />

<strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> his work. Textual comparison shows that he certainly<br />

knew Peng Xiao’s redaction, but also followed readings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tang<br />

text derived from <strong>the</strong> Yin Changsheng redaction, or from a very close<br />
