In addition to <strong>the</strong>se examples, which concern major doctrinal notions,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Wuzhen pian draws several o<strong>the</strong>r images and terms from <strong>the</strong><br />
Cantong qi. For example, <strong>the</strong> Cantong qi describes <strong>the</strong> joining <strong>of</strong><br />
Lead and Mercury saying that first <strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> Flower (Lead) is<br />
heated, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Flowing Pearl <strong>of</strong> Great Yang (Mercury) joins it.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Wuzhen pian describes this process using <strong>the</strong> same images:<br />
CTQ “<strong>The</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> Flower is <strong>the</strong> first to sing . . . <strong>The</strong> Yang (i.e., <strong>the</strong><br />
Flowing Pearl <strong>of</strong> Great Yang) is next to join it” ( 金 華 先 唱 . . .<br />
陽 乃 往 和 ; 62:7, 11) 3<br />
WZP “First <strong>the</strong> green leaves open, for Yang is <strong>the</strong> first to sing, <strong>the</strong>n a<br />
red flower blossoms, as Yin follows later” ( 初 開 綠 葉 陽 光 倡 、<br />
次 發 紅 花 陰 後 隨 ; “Lüshi” 12)<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r instances <strong>of</strong> shared vocabulary between <strong>the</strong> Cantong qi and<br />
<strong>the</strong> Wuzhen pian concern common alchemical terms, such as Yellow<br />
Sprout (huangya 黃 芽 ), Lovely Maid (chanü 女 ), River Chariot<br />
(heche 河 車 ), and several o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Note that, in <strong>the</strong>se verses, “<strong>the</strong> Yang” is an abbreviation <strong>of</strong> “Flowing<br />
Pearl <strong>of</strong> Great Yang” (taiyang liuzhu 太 陽 流 珠 ), which is a common alchemical<br />
name <strong>of</strong> Mercury. Since Mercury is an emblem <strong>of</strong> True Yin, “<strong>the</strong> Yang”<br />
actually means “<strong>the</strong> Yin.”<br />
