Provincial Clean Water Act (2006) Act To protect the quantity and quality of water in aquifers, rivers and<br />

lakes, through development of collaborative locally-driven,<br />

science-based protection plans.<br />

Drainage Act Act Provides for the regulation of drainage practices in Ontario.<br />

Endangered Species Act (1990) Act Provides for the conservation, protection, restoration and<br />

propagation of species of flora and fauna in Ontario that are<br />

threatened with extinction.<br />

Environmental Assessment Act (199) Act The purpose of this Act is to provide for the protection,<br />

conservation and wise management of the environment.<br />

Environmental Protection Act Act The purpose of this Act is to provide for the protection and<br />

conservation of the natural environment. R.S.O. 1990, c. E.19, s.3.<br />

Farming and Food Protection Act (1998) Act The Act is intended to ensure that farmers can carry out normal<br />

farm practices without fear of nuisance complaints or<br />

unnecessarily restrictive by-laws.<br />

Fish and Wildlife <strong>Conservation</strong> Act (1997) Act The new Fish and Wildlife <strong>Conservation</strong> Act came into force as of<br />

January 1, 1999. The Act enables the Ministry of Natural<br />

Resources (MNR) to provide sound management of the province’s<br />

fish and wildlife well into the next century. It replaces the Game<br />

and Fish Act, that last underwent major changes in 1980.<br />

Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act (1990) Act The Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act gives the Ministry of<br />

Natural Resources the mandate to manage water-related activities,<br />

particularly in the areas outside the jurisdiction of <strong>Conservation</strong><br />

Authorities.<br />

Municipal Act Act The Municipal Act sets forth regulations in regard to the<br />

structuring of municipalities in Ontario.<br />

<strong>Niagara</strong> Parks Commission (MOT) Act The <strong>Niagara</strong> Parks Act enables the <strong>Niagara</strong> Parks Commission to<br />

regulate the use of the parks, providing for protection and<br />

preservation of the Property of the Commissioner.<br />

Nutrient Management Act (OMAF) (2002) Act As part of the Ontario government’s Clean Water Strategy, the<br />

Nutrient Management Act provides for province-wide standards to<br />

address the effects of agricultural practices on the environment,<br />

especially as they relate to land-applied materials containing<br />

nutrients.<br />

Ontario Water Resources Act Act The Ontario Water Resource Act deals with the powers and<br />

obligations of the Ontario Clean Water Agency, as well as an<br />

assigned provincial officer, who monitors and investigates any<br />

potential problems with regards to water quality or supply. There<br />

are also extensive sections on Wells, Water Works, and Sewage<br />

works involving their operation, creation and other aspects.<br />

Pesticides Act Act The Ontario Pesticides Act establishes a classification system for<br />

pesticides and regulates the licensing of vendors and persons<br />

employed as applicators of pesticides, the storage and disposal of<br />

pesticides, and the requirements for notification of pesticide use.<br />

Places to Grow Act (2005) Act To enable decisions about growth to be made in ways that sustain<br />

a robust economy, strong communities, healthy environment and a<br />

culture of conservation.<br />

Provincial <strong>Plan</strong>ning Act (D) Act The purposes of this Act is to promote sustainable economic<br />

development in a healthy natural environment<br />

Safe Drinking Water Act (MOE) (2002) Act As recommended by Commissioner O’Connor, the government<br />

has passed a Safe Drinking Water Act, which expands on existing<br />

policy and practice and introduces new features to protect drinking<br />

water in Ontario. Its purpose is the protection of human health<br />

through the control and regulation of drinking-water systems and<br />

drinking-water testing and provides legislative authority to<br />

implement 50 of the 93 recommendations made in Commissioner<br />

O’Connor’s Part Two Report.<br />

On February 15, 1994, the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR)<br />

took effect and the people of Ontario received an important new<br />

tool to help them protect and restore the natural environment.<br />

While the Government of Ontario retains the primary<br />

responsibility for environmental protection, the EBR provides<br />

every resident with formal rights to play a more effective role.<br />
