GLOSSARY OF TERMS<br />

Alluvial Soil<br />

Sediments deposited by recent flood processes. They are variable textures and drainage but are<br />

usually imperfectly or poorly drained.<br />

Aquatic<br />

Growing in, living in, or dependent upon water.<br />

Aquifer<br />

A water bearing geological formation. An aquifer can consist of sand, gravel, or rock formations<br />

and is capable of storing and conveying water.<br />

Basin<br />

See “<strong>Watershed</strong>”.<br />

Benthic<br />

Any organism or collection of organisms (animals or plants) that live on the bottom of a lake,<br />

river or other waterbody.<br />

Best Management Practice (BMP)<br />

Any management practice, either structural or non-structural, used to address impacts from land<br />

use changes (increased runoff from urban surfaces, agricultural practices, etc.).<br />

Biodiversity<br />

The genetic, taxonomic and ecosystem variety of a given area<br />

Catchment Area<br />

See Drainage Basin.<br />

Conduit<br />

Conduit is any open or close channel used to convey water.<br />

Contaminant<br />

Any chemical and biological substance in air, water or soil that makes it unsuitable for its<br />

intended use or consumption is considered as contaminant. Contaminants could result from<br />

natural or unnatural activities.<br />

Contours<br />

A line on a map joining points of same elevation. See also “Topography”.<br />

Corridor<br />

Elongate, naturally vegetated area that links larger natural areas. Corridors provide for<br />

movement and interchange of plant and animal species necessary for their long-term<br />

maintenance.<br />

Creek<br />

A small stream draining a small drainage basin.<br />
