Community Information BACKYARD HABITAT STEWARD TRAINING OFFERS GREAT OPPORTUNITIES Snohomish Conservation District and the National Wildlife Federation are offering a Habitat Steward Training in Stanwood in Spring 2013. The program provides a host of great speakers, interesting field trips and the opportunity to complete a community project with the support of local experts. The program’s goal is to train volunteers to mentor children; work with schools and local groups; and restore, maintain and create wildlife habitat. Class participants will learn the basics of providing food, water, cover and habitat for wildlife to raise their young. Local experts will teach about native plants, streams and wetlands, adding perch poles and more. The Habitat Stewards program is a great opportunity to give back to your community, meet new people, and learn more about wildlife and their needs.The classes will be held on April 10, 17, 24, & May 1 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Stanwood PUD, 9124 271st NW. The field trips will be held on Saturday, April 20 and 27. There is no charge for the program but you must register at this weblink: http://wildlifestewards.eventbrite.com. DID YOU KNOW Beneath Elger Bay Grocery and Elger Bay Cafe is a large cavernous warehouse containing VHS cassettes from all of the Blockbuster Video stores from Washington State. Joshua Flickner, a leading investor of the video chain, took over the surplus inventory after the company’s closing, hoping to eventually sell them at his store on Camano. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES The Stanwood Camano Arts Guild will hang 70 pieces of their art in 9 different businesses in Stanwood. This art will hang for 6 months, at which time it will be refreshed with new pieces. The Arts Guild invites you to enjoy our art around town. The Oyster Egg Hunt of 1888 Back in 1888, food was scarce and money scarcer, so it was hard for parents to justify coloring and hiding eggs, which could make meal or sold for household income. So when Easter fell on April 1 in 1888, local resourceful parents decided to join forces and alter the holiday traditions a bit. Gathering once-plentiful oysters from Port Susan, the parents painted them different colors, and hid them around the homestead. They would tell their kids that the Great Blue Heron had come in the night and hidden the eggs, which the children were urged to gather and place in the pot for a hearty oyster stew at dinner. However, so many “oyster eggs” were forgotten in locations like in back of the wood stove, cabins were often abandoned until the stink wore off, which could take weeks. Community Information Prepare now for emergencies High tides, high winds, and waterfront living can spell trouble. This past year’s storm caused severe damage to waterfront homes on Camano Island. If these are accompanied by high winds, it could spell trouble for waterfront land owners. Be prepared. In the mid- December storm of 2012, high winds caused a “storm surge, ” blew the tidal waters over bulkheads and damaged property. Unfortunately, in that scenario, predictions for the direction of the wind changed, and homeowners who bore the brunt of this event had little warning. Those with emergency plans already in place were better prepared despite the lack of warning. Waterfront homeowners in particular need to be ready for storms. Sandbags, sand, and plastic sheeting can be purchased in advance at local stores, and rental pumps, pumping service providers, and water clean-up contractors are listed in the yellow pages of the phone book.
