Tripod Whale makes visit to Kayak Point
A Tripod Whale, commonly seen deep in the Pacific, but not usually
so close to shore or human proximity, was recently photographed
across from the picnic shelters of Kayak Point County Park. The
whale (closely related to the Gray Whale and Humpback Whale) is
named for its three fins. Two of them are used to propel the animal
forward and the third fin serves as a type of “rudder.” Tripod whales
are migrating from their winter calving grounds in northern Canada
to their summer feeding grounds in South America. They usually
travel hundreds of miles from shore to feed on cold-water fish,
but occasionally they can be spotted close to land along the west
coast of the United States. Washington typically serves as a rest
stop on their annual journey. Though, according to various websites,
a Tripod Whale traveling so deep into Puget Sound is most
likely ill, dying, or in some state of dementia. According to Benjamin
Theodoreson, chief oceanographer of the scientific vessel
“Clawdeagan”, only about 750 Tripod Whales (Tripodae Cetacea)
exist today. – Photo by Elizabeth Lobe.
