Trial Ferry Run across Saratoga Passage
Susanna Mantis, owner of Z’s in Stanwood, is photographed here
on the “SS Olympia”, a restored 1972 Washington State Ferry as it
traveled between Clinton on Whidbey Island, and Maple Grove
boat launch on Camano Island. The ferry, smaller than most on the
ferry fleet, is making trial runs across Whidbey Island and Camano
Island as a proposed mode of transportation between the two islands.
Maple Grove has been in the planning stages of providing
a large enough docking facility since 2009 and is now receiving a
permit to build in 2014. – NW Dept of Ferry Systems.
This date
in History:
On April 1,
1917, local
drug-runners
from Camano
Island and railroad
engineers
from Sedro-
Woolley created
an underwater
rail line called
the “Camedro
Lines”. Tracks
linked Skagit
Bay to Camano
Island through
the Douglas
Slough. Watertight
storage
cars were used
to transfer
drugs unnoticed
for 3 years
until a landslide
destroyed 5
miles of track.
Quicksand at Camano Island State Park
A new sign has recently been planted at a northern portion of Camano
Island State Park. Millions of years of ocean tides hitting the
beach has caused slight shifts on the earth’s crust plates. Now a
more liquid layer composed of ocean water and tiny sand particles
have caused a natural “sinkhole” to develop under the beach sand.
Many people have complained about getting stuck and one dog
had disappeared completely. The new sign has been placed indefinitely
to warn people from walking into the unsafe zone.
