F<strong>in</strong>ally, it reduces the price po<strong>in</strong>t of cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> consider<strong>in</strong>g the previous<br />

two po<strong>in</strong>ts, cost is the core sell<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t of the clouds.<br />

<strong>Cloud</strong> providers see the value of promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teroperability even though<br />

many would love to have the customer locked <strong>in</strong>. However, <strong>in</strong> these days when<br />

open source is a much better sell than proprietary features, cloud vendors<br />

could f<strong>in</strong>d that provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teroperability gets many enterprises off the fence<br />

<strong>and</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g toward the clouds.<br />

The success of <strong>in</strong>teroperability with<strong>in</strong> the cloud providers’ realms will<br />

depend on their ability to stop build<strong>in</strong>g features <strong>and</strong> start build<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>teroperability.<br />

With the huge l<strong>and</strong> grab go<strong>in</strong>g on right now, that is easy to talk about<br />

but tougher to do. At the end of the day, cloud users will have to <strong>in</strong>sist on<br />

openness, as they did <strong>in</strong> the world of <strong>SOA</strong> <strong>and</strong> other architectural shifts <strong>in</strong><br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This could very well be one of those times when everyone talks a good<br />

game <strong>and</strong> pays dues <strong>in</strong>to some organization promot<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ards, but the<br />

solution cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be proprietary because of the cost <strong>and</strong> latency that the<br />

cloud providers will have to suffer when coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g with their competition.<br />

Aga<strong>in</strong>, end users will have to make it a core criteria for provider selection. As<br />

with anyth<strong>in</strong>g, money talks.<br />

<strong>and</strong> operational host<strong>in</strong>g. Platforms such as Google App Eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong><br />
