You can use all the quantitative data you can get,<br />

but you still have to distrust it <strong>and</strong> use your<br />

own <strong>in</strong>telligence <strong>and</strong> judgment.<br />

Let’s step back a bit <strong>and</strong> look at what we are go<strong>in</strong>g to do<br />

here. In the next several chapters, I’ll present a rudimentary<br />

methodology that extends your enterprise architecture<br />

out to the clouds. The basic steps of this methodology<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

1. Def<strong>in</strong>e the data.<br />

2. Def<strong>in</strong>e the services.<br />

3. Def<strong>in</strong>e the processes.<br />

4. Def<strong>in</strong>e governance.<br />

5. Def<strong>in</strong>e which c<strong>and</strong>idate data, services, <strong>and</strong> processes<br />

should live <strong>in</strong> the clouds <strong>and</strong> which should<br />

live on-premise.<br />

Let’s say we did a wonderful job <strong>in</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g a bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

case for cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g, as def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Chapter 4, “Mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Case for <strong>Cloud</strong>s,” <strong>and</strong> now it is time to<br />

get to work. We start with what is easiest to def<strong>in</strong>e, the <strong>in</strong>formation,<br />

<strong>and</strong> work up from there.<br />

The idea is that the better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g we have<br />

around our exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation, service, <strong>and</strong> process<br />

models, the better chance that our move to the clouds<br />

will be successful. In some <strong>in</strong>stances, the <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
